YouTube - Todd Bertuzzi destroys Ryan Johnson

While I don't see this as being particulary malicious on Berty's part.... it makes you wonder what will come of this. The Red Wings need Bert right now with the injuries they have, not to mention how steady he's been over the course of the season.

I just wonder what the wheel of justice will have to say about this. What do you fellas think? Was this a dirty hit?

I think Milbury and Jones hit the nail on the head

it was a lazy, awkward and clumsy hit and the elbow hit Johnson because of it. The ass was leading with his ass. IMO not suspendable

Still suspendable. IMO I think the league HAS to do this, or else the Cooke breakthrough won't get us anywhere. I don't think it has to be a big suspension, but it's still an elbow to the head. A couple games worthy at least.

DETROIT -- Todd Bertuzzi will not be suspended for his hit to the head against Chicago's Ryan Johnson on Monday, the Detroit Red Wings confirmed today.

Bertuzzi received a five-minute penalty for elbowing and was ejected from the game at 5:17 of the first period.

"I don’t think it was anything malicious,'' Johnson said. "He was very apologetic, came walking right in here and said ‘Sorry’ as soon as it happened.''

I agree it wasn't malicious, but still think just because of the feeling the NHL wants in the league it should've garnered a few. One or two at least. Also, I don't think Bertuzzi will ever go after anyone with malicious intent...if he has a soul after the Moore incident, he certainly won't be attacking anyone.

Slightly off topic but I was watching the highlinghts last night and I was thinking that I wanted to see Chicago lose and miss the playoffs but then I also thought that I want Detroit to lose because I hate Bertuzzi. So I had to ask myself which one I hate more.

I learned something about myself last night, to my surprise I hate Todd Bertuzzi more than the entire Blackhawks organization.

As far as the hit goes, it was stupid but not malicious. I still think he should have gotten a game for it. If the NHL wants to send a message they need to be consistent (fat chance, I know) and let the players know that they are responsible for their actions regardless of intentions. And I don't say that just because I can't stand that fat waste of a career, I would have the same POV if it were Marleau.

I think that would just make the league way too pussified if they handed out suspensions and fines for any head contact. It is easy to tell if intent was blatant or accidental. The recent Cooke elbow was a pure example of malicious intent. This one his back was almost turned completely to Johnson. Accidental follow through that caught him.

It doesn't look like Bert was trying to get Johnson's head, I think he just came in lazily and thought he was going to drive his side into RJ. Johnson was kind of off balance, and Bert's a big guy so the part that ended up blasting him was the elbow. If Bert got nailed a game for it, I wouldn't have minded at all, but I don't think there was a lot of malicious intent.

hey eddie is it just me or has his play really fallen off recently after the lawyers started talking about setting a court date for Moore/Bertuzzi

probably should have gotten a game if the league is serious and consistent about this kind of stuff. not malicious but also not just purely accidental. it was careless. i don't necessarily agree with the policy but i also think it's worse to send mixed messages. it only serves to confuse players more, and i think fast, big, strong and confused players are just as dangerous as fast, big, strong and dirty players.

I agree. I don't think there was any malicious intent or anything...just blatant stupidity and laziness on Bert's part. His elbow was just about at the height of his shoulder. And as you say, he's a big guy, which puts his elbow up kind of high on a lot of other players.

I don't think the league should have come down on him in a Cooke-like manner by any means. But I do think he should have gotten 1 (maybe 2) game(s) just to show the players they need to take more responsibility out there with regards to headshots.

I noticed it too, but when you're as inconsistent as Bert it's very hard to tell if there's a reason he's sucking, or if it's just his natural cycle. Maybe he was trying to break Johnson's neck to take his mind off his other neck breaking incident.

JMO But Berts elbow did come up and I like old time hockey too but when the elbow pads are made out of very hard plastic it hurts. Try taking one to the jaw some day.

My argument has been the players have NO respect for other players anymore and it shows. You never saw hits like this when they didn't wear helmets and respected the fact that they were fellow PLAYERS and earning a living like them.

Soften up the equipment and see how eager these guy's are to fly into other players like projectiles.

Throw a fucking body check for christ sakes and not bring up the sticks and elbows. It worked for years why not now? Because players don't know how to throw clean body checks (esp hips checks) anymore.

Just my two cents.

Well said, Boss. Being lazy in not an excuse to throw an inadvertent elbow. I don't think it was Bert's intention to throw an elbow, but he should know better.

As for campbell and the decision on a suspension..... :deadhorse:

I just get pissed when people say we have the "pussification" of hockey. Really? Lets have a street fight and I will smash you in the jaw with a pair of brass knuckles.

The elbow pad are made out of PC or ABS in some cases (yes I was in the plastics industry) If the guy throwing the fucking elbow knew it might hurt him as much he is less likely to do it.

Body checks and hip checks are the lost art, Bringing up the elbows and sticks are in. Turn it back into a mans game when it hurt as much to throw a check than to receive one. Then we separate the men from the pussies (sorry ladies)

Wasn't it enough that he got the game? We needed him. Bad.

Auto, I respect you but "Needing" player should never ever factor in. It's the action that should count not the standings.
