That report was hilarious..... The only thing Mike Brown was getting impatient with was Marvin signing his extension. Marvin toys with Mike's emotions every spring.

My guess is that Marvin only coaches 1 or 2 more seasons for the Bengals. It won't be because he's fired, but because he wants out. 14 years is a long time and I think a disappointing regular season or another playoff failure might make him walk.

And I'd wager that Paul Guenther will be his eventual replacement.

I'm wondering if this extension would have happened if Hue Jackson would have stayed? There was that talk of if Hue stayed he would have Marvin's job when Marvin left. Now they tack on another year...maybe to groom the next successor? I'm almost positive Marvin Lewis has a front office job waiting for him in Cincy as soon as he wants to hang up the headphones.

Maybe over the next two years the Vikings implode and dump Zimmer so he can come back as head coach. Or maybe no one has any hope for the Browns and they figure Hue will be looking for a job by then.

Marvin can win it all this year and then drop the mike after the Super Bowl.

The extension just protects Marvin from coaching in a lame duck season.... Same thing they've done the last 3 or 4 offseasons. I think Marvin hangs it up when he chooses - Successor in place or not.

Marvin is staying until he has a walk off season.

either losing in disgrace Bruce Coslet or Dick Lebeau style
or winning and leaving for more money (get out while the getting's good)

I would not be surprised to see Marvin end up somewhere in the front office. Not here, probably, but I think when he leaves, he's done coaching. He'll find a nice front office/GM/Director Of Scouting type gig.

There is a rumor circulating the internet that Marvin and Hue Jackson went to MB with a 2 year succession plan. Hue would be the next HC once Marv stepped down. Good Ol' Mikey boy declined the offer and thus Hue left to take the Browns HC job.

Marvin will be gone by 2017. His hand chosen successor is now gone too. Who's ready for Ken Zampese to be the next HC?

Stating the obvious: Mike Brown has to be the worst owner in the history of professional sports.

Daniel Snyder? James Dolan? Dan Gilbert? Jimmy Haslem? Donald Sterling? I mean, Mikey boy is definitely in the discussion, but the worst ever? That's a tad bit of hyperbole.

Maybe the organization didn't want to work with Hue. While everyone around here seems to universally love the guy, there were more than a few 'insiders' that said several owners wouldn't want him as a head coach.

I think our next HC will be Paul Guenther - I'm not enthusiastic about it, but I think it's going to happen.

The report says that Mike was OK with the plan, but did not want to put it in writing. A lot can change in two years, and he didn't want the team to be legally bound to hire Hue should things have changed drastically.

Can't say I don't blame either side, really. If I'm Hue, and I'm staying, I want it in writing that I'm the HC in waiting. If I'm Brown, I'm not locking myself into anyone 2+ years out when so much can change. I'd have a hand-shake, wink-wink, deal but nothing on paper.

Brown was probably right on this one. but there's no way to tell the future.

this may change Marvin's feelings about leaving in 2 years though.

The head coach in waiting idea is not the best plan IMO. Too many things change over the course of 2 seasons. I suppose you can make the argument that it has been tested in college and it might work there (though I don't know what sort of success rate they have with it over and above what they would get on the open market). But the NFL is crazy - If the team stops performing 2 seasons from now, we'll be begging for the Brown family to search outside the organization.

You forget that the Cincinatti Bengals are not run like any other NFL franchise. Mike Brown runs the team like it was his own mom and pop grocery store, and he could give a damn what the fans are begging for.

Can't say I disagree..... Which is another reason why he would never guarantee a guy something (and pay him more) for something that hasn't even happened.

I have no issues with what Brown did.

Even from year to year things can change drastically, let alone in 2 years. I like Hue, but it could be a real big hassle if they end up legally bound to hire him as a head-coach.

Hue will be available in 2 years anyway..... There are already early reports that the coach and new front office are a bad match. And it's Cleveland.
