See now.

Yet another assumption.

We see Ben Simmons shooting in summer workouts and pick up games, and the shot looks pretty good.

I don’t think he is the hardest worker in the league by any stretch. He does seem to be more on the lazy side when it comes to workouts. But I also don’t think he is the man 6er fans want to portray him as.

It is very clear to me that he has extreme issues with confidence. And I think that has a lot more to do with his shooting performance or his unwillingness to attempt shots than failure to work on his game.

He very much cares about what others think of him

Ok, had not heard that.

But still…

Like you said it was mutually beneficially. So holding that against Simmons now completely changes the narrative. Sixer fans can’t be mad at him for sitting out his rookie season.

I recall them ruling Simmons out before the year started

So yeah, I think the sixers were definitely on that

“The work” entails employing it in game action. I’ll go the other way on this: Simmons needs work as an offensive rebounder and a finisher around the rim as well. So why the hell is he devoting any work time to taking long distance jumpers he has no intention of employing in games? That’s like me justifying my employer with the idea that me working on my wood carving is helping me become a better English teacher.

I am going to laugh my ass off if the Sixers wind up being better without Ben Simmons. I still think that unlikely, but at this point you have to wonder if it can turn out to be the case, as guys like Tyrese Maxey develop.

Maxey has just two turnovers in the last 3 games. Kid is figuring it out.

Maybe because he isn’t well mentally.

Seriously.

You agree he is fragile, no?

He works on his skills in the off-season because he hopes to improve enough to where he has the confidence to take the shot in the game.

But it just never comes. Because his shooting issues were never about his form or lack of reps. He struggles to shoot because he struggles with confidence.

And now?

His teammates, coaches, the organization and the fans are doing the exact worst possible thing you could for a very talented player who doesn’t have faith in himself.

And you all can’t even entertain the possibility that you have done him wrong.

I think it’s the other way. He has immense confidence in who he is as a player and doesn’t see the need to add to his game.

“I am who I am. It is what it is.”

He's a different player than Simmons of course. He is more of a scoring-first guard than a distributor, but this team has needed guys who can create their own offense. And his defense, while nowhere near Simmons' has clearly improved to the point where he is OK on that end of the floor now.

What you notice very clearly now with Philly is that the ball moves way better in halfcourt sets without Simmons on the floor. The spacing is better, Embiid becomes the center of gravity in the post or at the top of the circle, and everything revolves around him much, much more smoothly...because everyone around him can sink open shots. It is becoming clear how much Simmons actually held this offense back.

The ball movement has been exceptional.

You continue to ignore the fact that the Sixers had his back for years throughout this whole situation. Years. Only at the end of the playoffs last year, when it became impossible to ignore the elephant in the room, were things said.

At what point do you have to admit the truth as an organization and say publicly that Ben Simmons needs to improve or you need to move on from him?

There is a world of difference between confidence issues and actual mental health issues that cause instability in other parts of your life. Major Depression, suicidal ideations, bipolar etc

Those would be disorders that would be worth paying your employee to seek help for. Saying you're sad because you can't hit a free throw is the lamest shit I've ever seen.

If he wants to sit out to "seek help" then he rightly should not get paid to do so.

I don't think you can successfully force that through once the NBPA gets their lawyers involved. It's tricky to force someone to see a specific doctor.
Clarified in a later post that when I say "team doctors", I'm more talking about keeping the team informed that he's actually seeing someone. Not that he has to a specific doctor.

And that’s the missing piece. The Sixers don’t even have confirmation that he’s seen any doctor about this.

This is exactly what he hasn't done.

Then he DEFINITELY should not get paid. That's the basis for any short term leave pay that any company would have.
Guy on the local radio compared it to this:
Player: I have a torn ligament in my knee and I can’t play.
Team: that sucks, let us see the mri and the doctors report
Player: oh I don’t have them but still pay me.
