Ricky Roma
The Catch
After watching this game again, I really don't know where to start.....so I guess I'll just say....we flat out gave Chicago this game. You simply cannot take 16 penalties (a few of them tacky) and go -4 in the turnover department and win. The penalty situation not only contributes to the loss, but it makes for a terrible game viewing-wise. The refs need to tone it down, or at least show some consistency throughout the league.
Kaepernick was terrible. The 3 ints/1 fumble were equally on him and good defensive play, but he was generally inaccurate all evening. His decision-making was sub-par as well, and not just with his attempts. People are generally complaining about the three consecutive runs inside the Bears 10 yard line, as was I, but as I learned later, the third run was an audible....don't know what Kaep saw. Yet another example of how everything under the sun isn't Greg Roman's fault. Still, the first two runs were with a loaded defensive alignment, leaving someone 1 on 1 on the outside. You combine that with poor O-line play, a few drops by the receivers, and penalties.....recipe for disaster. Gore was one of the few standouts on offense....something we can basically say for the last decade.
The defense was pretty much effective, except for the penalties. They completely stuffed the run, and the Bears only had one real drive that wasn't really paved with yellow flags. Strong outings from J. Smith and I. Williams. Great push up the middle. Willis was business as usual and Willhoite played a better game this week. Lemonier was particularly bad however....the worst player on defense Sunday Night. The younger guys in general had a rough night. Pretty much no push from the outside at all on Cutler. Fangio relies much on the talent vs. implementing schemes to take on offenses.
The whole 'killer instinct' is somewhat irrelevant when the real issue were turnovers and penalties. Had they taken care of business, this is another game put away early. The bogus penalty call on Boldin negating the long TD Gore run, followed up by Colin's fumble a couple of plays later summed up the night. The one good thing is the Vernon Davis' injury isn't severe and could be back this Sunday.
