Bautista's flip was appropriate. But a guy who flips on a deep fly ball out in a blow out game is grand standing and potentially worthy of bruise.I don't mind so long as it's something vaguely worth celebrating. Batflipping on a single down 8 runs just makes you look like an ass.
I agree with Ortiz. The bad flip is pretty harmless. The mlb rules are already anal enough to require the homerun hitter to jog around and touch every base so it's not like flipping the bat will slow down the game any. Most people probably don't even notice it if they are watching where the ball goes. (of course if you're watching on tv, you get to see the flip 20 times after the fact)“When a power hitter does a bat flip, you don't hurt nobody. If I hit a homer, did a bat flip, threw it in the stands and break a couple of people's heads, I understand. But that's not what it is,” he added. “When you see a pitcher do a fist pump when they strike out any one of us, or jumping on the mound, I don't see anybody talking about that. Nobody's talking about that. Act the same way when we do a bat flip. It's emotion. It is, ‘I got you.' Just like a pitcher does, ‘I got you,' when they strike [you] out. As a hitter, I don't mind. You got myself out? Good for you. They work hard to do that [expletive]. But when I get you, good for me. Period.” - David Ortiz
The idea of a pitcher getting upset at a bat flip is pretty stupid. The batter just launched one off of you and he's not allowed to show emotion? I agree that it shouldn't happen if you are getting killed but that's the same in all sports. Honestly baseball needs more emotion. The old guys are still clinging to outdated bullshit unwritten rules.
Yeah I remember Valverde during his Dback days. I think my main point is that pitchers look stupid getting mad at bat flips while at the same time they're celebrating strikeouts. And compared to other sports the emotion level in baseball is very low. Maybe it's the pace of the game but it's also that the tradition and unwritten rules fight it at all costs. Baseball is very slow to adapt to the times. I mean replay is basically brand new in a sport that could've used it for years.Where does that stop? Pitchers yelling and fist-pumping after each strike is a good thing?
I've had my fill of Valverde on my team. Don't really care for more. I'm already sick and tired of football players injuring themselves by doing little dances after managing to actually tackle somebody for once (even in frickin' preseason).

Can't believe that was already 6 years ago.fify
