Just ran across some video clips of some baseball plays that are really .... different ....
A pitcher throwing a pitch that is somewhere in between the catcher and the 1st baseman ... a rundown that took forever ... and my personal favorite .... a home run off the head of Jose Canseco ....

My favorite funny play was in the late 70's early 80's when a Philly pitcher is running towards third and at the last second decides to slide, then his spike caught just before the bag and it acted like a pole vaulting pole and he vaulted over the bag without touching it and landed on his chest. Somehow he wasn't hurt and crawled back to the bag. LOL :pound:

My favorite was Brian McRae running through the OF wall in the minor leagues.

Of course, the Will Craig play will forever be on these lists. The play essentially ended the kids MLB career (he is in Korea now).

It was softball, beer softball even, with girls on the teams as well, but I started a triple play once. It went third to left to second.

I grounded into a triple play once in pickup softball…

Did It go "...third to left to second."?
No, it went pitcher to shortstop to left field to 3rd base to right field to center field to catcher to 1st base to pitcher before cal finally reached 1st. He was initially safe but the ball got away from the pitcher and cal tried to go to 2nd but was finally tagged out by the umpire.

I like your calls better, but unfortunately, it was a boring 5-4-3…

I was actually quite impressed that the play was made so solidly…

Today in 1986

I was thinking of this play when Casali got called for the balk earlier this year. Wouldn’t this play fall under the same rule, if called strictly?

Not sure if it would. My understanding is while fielding the ball the only piece of equipment to be used is the glove. I could be wrong on this particular play though. It is a very muddy rule that can be used in any way I guess.

But if you remove your glove and throw it at the ball (and it makes contact with the ball), it is a “ground rule triple”. I believe the rule, as written, requires that equipment is connected to the body and being used as intended. Removing the equipment and passing it, along with the ball, is not how the glove is intended to be used.

I don’t know the answer to this. I am just posing the question.

It is a good question.

Checking up on it, it has actually happened a few other times. In each case the runner was called out.

It happened with the Giants about 10-15 years ago, iirc. It has always been viewed as a humorous, yet completely legal play. But I wonder if, with a strict enforcement of rules, it should be a “balk”.

Not an odd play, per se, but I was at Dodger Stadium in the late 90's when Fernando Tatis (Sr) hit two grand slams. In the same inning. Off the same pitcher (Chan Ho Park). The Dodger friends I was with were in agony. I thought it was pretty cool. I still have the game in one of my scorebooks. A Giants scorebook, of course. :D

Watch and enjoy.

Which begs the question why was park still in after giving up 7 runs in that inning before the second slam?

lol
