The injuries didnt hurt near as much as some believe. So Nate and Broyles got hurt and TY lost his mind. None of them had big years the year before either. They didnt force safties to leave off CJ anyways. And when Broyles and Nate were healthy? They still werent looking good on offense. They lost Best? They didnt have him much of the time the previous year either. Best didnt give us a consistent run game. He had a few BIG PLAY runs. That was all.

I disagree with that completely.

First of all no one is going to force safeties to leave Calvin, what you need is someone underneath who can get open. Kris Durham and Brian Robiske do not have the quickness to get open at all. It's naive to downplay the importance of the other receivers in this offense, there is a reason why Mayhew used a 2nd rounder on a receiver.

As to Best...Best was not a between the tackles guy but he was a game changer and game breaker. In the 6 games prior to his 2011 concussion he had almost 700 yards of offense. (4.6 YPC rushing BTW). Defenses fear him especially in the passing game. LB's arent worries about Leshoure in the flats. It (having that threat in the backfield) changes the way the defense plays the game. It gives the offense the dynamic to force defenses into mismatches, you show 21 personnel, then you bring Reggie Bush in motion to the slot now you are in 31 with a guy who is an excellent receiver! There are only a few guys in the NFL who can do that, Reggie Bush is the best in the league in that regard and we have him.

All of the receiving options going down was a major hit. And it forced a knee-jerk reaction which cost us a pick. Id say that impacted not only last season, but this upcoming one, and several in the future. Even if only moderately. Losing Broyles was a huge factor in Staff's shittiness. (Relative shittiness, as yards don't mean much when you don't score.). Would have been hard for him (RB)to do much for us the year before... More than hard, actually impossible when you stop and think about it.
