Glad I put some (fake) money on this game. After a series of bad bets, who'd have thunk it was the Ms trashing Keuchel to turn my luck around. Now if only it were real money...
So the Mariners can hit at Safeco. 11 runs in a game Keuchel started. Good stuff. I know Safeco does hurt players stats, I won't try to argue otherwise, but I also think some of the M's struggles at home on offense are mental. If they could finally shake that...
The M's needed to get off to a good start on this homestand to put their first homestand out of people's minds and keep the momentum going from the last road trip, and they've done that. Putting the hurt on Keuchel in this one after what he's done to us over the past couple of years can do nothing but give confidence to the guys that they can beat him, and that'll come in handy when they have to face him again next week in Houston. The Astros as a team have been a pain in the butt ever since they joined the AL West, so it was also nice to get off to a good start against them in general.
Yesterday's game was one of the best over-all games I've seen the Mariners play in a long, long time. There was so much more to be encouraged about than just the final score. If they continue to do the things I saw them do last night (smart base running, making 'good outs' to advance a baserunner), they could be a good team.
Probably the most encouraging thing I saw last night was Cano deliberately grounding out to the right side, to allow the runner at second base to advance (Dae Ho Lee did it also). Honorable mention to Cruz, who cut down on his swing after falling behind in the count, and settled for an RBI single.
If Cano and Cruz continue to do things like this, the rest of the team will follow their lead.
