I think the Cowboys should run the ball, but they may not be able too. Orton hasn't started a game in nearly 3 years, there is going to be some rust. The Eagles will more than likely stack the box and make Orton beat them. Its a no brainer. If Orton is able to beat them a few times, then they could find running room later in the game. Everything depends on Orton's play. I'm hoping for the best.

ESPN by Todd Archer.

Sometime after the Cowboys returned to Dallas following their victory at Washington on Sunday, quarterback Tony Romo received an epidural injection to relieve pain and reduce inflammation related to the herniated disk in his lower back, according to sources.

It is typically two or three days before doctors can determine whether the injection has succeeded. This is the normal conservative treatment protocol for such a back injury, and the Cowboys hope that it enables Romo to recover in time to play in Sunday night's winner-take-all matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

But sources close to the quarterback consider that a long shot and remain skeptical he can safely play and function as an NFL quarterback, especially in such a short time.

"I would be very, very surprised if he got back on the field," one source said.

At this time, Romo has been advised that he likely will need surgery eventually, but sources say that no such procedure has been scheduled.

Doctors often treat patients with epidurals to block pain and promote healing. Often, multiple injections are required over time before the patient's symptoms dramatically improve. It is also possible the damage is such that the injections will not provide relief.

If he received the shot before the MRI this is not a new injury. There is no way a Dr would have given him that shot without knowing what was going on in there. So perhaps that means he has been dealing with this for a while and really has a good chance to play if they can knock the pain down a little.

If they shot him up, maybe he could play. It all comes down to how long you want Romo to play in this league. He will be 34 next season. He is going to go into the offseason with his back jacked up as it is. There's a good chance that if he's shot up and plays with this, he could be seriously injured. With the injuries he has played with the last few years, if they shot him up and played him, the guy is looking at being crippled by the time he's 50. Maybe most fans think that's ok because of the money he makes, but I wouldn't let him play

With that contract, at least 3 more years of reasonably productive play would be nice.

That's what I'm getting at. Something I haven't heard anyone mention is how much Romo plays golf factors into his injury. Freddie Couples had tons of back issues without being in 16 car wrecks a year for 10 years. A lot of guys that play golf have issues with their back. In combination with the pounding he's taking, I'd be really careful with the guy.

Orton is a very good backup NFL QB. This is exactly why we paid him such a big amount of money each year to hold the clip board. We are a better team with Romo no doubt and we should not be a favorite this week of course, but we CAN win this game with Orton. We aren't a very good team, but neither is Philly.

I've come on here saying Dallas has a very good shot of winning this game but I think Philly is a good team Jarntt. They have a huge hole in their secondary at both safety positions but if you look at this team it is pretty good at WR, TE, RB, QB, OLine especially, DLine and have pretty decent LBers. THey dont have a dominant superstar on D like a Demarcus Ware but after going 7-1 over their last 8 games I think the Eagles are definitely a good team with a big hole in the secondary.

But dont change this post into me saying Philly is a top team in the NFL. Dont call it a troll post. All Im saying is Philly has a good team and have been 7-1 over the last half of the season. But being that we dont have a game changer type on D and Dallas has a good run game and a star WR that can exploit a bad secondary. Dallas is completely capable of winning but I think most of the country looks at Philly as the better team then Dallas (especially with Romo out) and its indicated in the Eagles -7.5 on the road.

Now I thought totally different on this and I hope you are right. I figured he was in so much pain on the flight that they gave him the injection and then learned of the herniated disc the next day, meaning they were just trying to ease the pain thinking it was nothing and then boom- herniated disc shows up - which means out for the year

They won't stick an epidural in your back without knowing exactly where the needle tip is. Odds are they planned for the epidural even before the MRI, as soon as they saw the results they immediately did the epidural. Epidurals are done with the doctor watching a live X ray of the area. The needle is too close to the spine to risk not knowing exactly where the needle is.:wtf2:

Which is why I said I agree with Jarntt...... This wasnt something new. Maybe something they hid. Which would explain those couple of weeks Romo just seemed really off.

Someone was ready and prepared to give that injection

Word is it was not a epidural but a steroids shot & it will take a few days to see if it positevly takes affect & relieves the pain

Im saying they knew there was a back issue .... I'm not going to guess at how much of a back issue..... but yeah if a needle was there and ready .... someone knew something

He didnt goto the hospital .... and MRI equipment isn't locker room standards. (Hence why they always say with any player ... "will undergo an MRI the following day")

Funny, all the written reports is an epidural. I've had 3 epidurals and similar procedure where they burned off the affected nerve. Anytime they stick a needle anywhere near your spine it will done with an xray. This was pre-planned.

Philly is only a big favorite on the road because they scored 50 points in their last game and Romo might not play. Had they played the Cowboys in Dallas after getting embarrassed in Minnesota, "most of the country" wouldn't have seen Philly as a better team and they would have been an underdog. It's that "you are only as good as your last game" mentality or prisoner of the moment. But in reality, Philly is not like they were in their last game. They are an average team just like the Cowboys who's upside in the playoffs is making the Divisional round and nothing more.

In reality the Eagles are a better road team than a home team and nothing like the team we beat in Philly or the team that lost to Minnesota

please, stop trying to drag our team down into your shit-hole. after they win sunday, they'll be a 10-6 team with a 6-2 road record and 7-1 overall in their last 8. they have the #2 offense and have shown themselves to be capable of playing solid defense as the year has moved along. they are nothing like the high school drama mess known as the cowboys.

in the last 6 weeks they've gone into oakland and absolutely destroyed them, into green bay to win by 14, beat the cards at home, beat the lions at home by 14 and also destroyed the bears at home. if picking out that vikings game makes you ladies feel better for a few more days, so be it.

The Eaqles have no better chance at the SB than Dallas.

I really haven't followed too closely since half the info seems false or purposely misleading. But, It Could be both. An Epidural is basically where the shot goes - just outside the spinal cord. A Steroid may be what they give you to help the pain.
