Well, because of those kids I considered this...but also realized I was not cool enough to pull it off. It's the fins. You have to be able to wear shades at night to drive with fins.

Drove out towards the coast this morning to help my best man hang some custom built cabinetry and came across one of these at exit 7. Different shade of green, but otherwise it looked to be a beautiful survivor with the rallye wheels and 442 badging.

This was my high school fuckmobile. My parents never thought. 400 horses. Fold down the back seat....

The ball and chain and I were once rousted by cops one long weekend when I was home from university. Parked behind a graveyard.... The cop went to church with my parents. Funny stuff.

Another time one afternoon out on logging road in the middle of nowhere, we suddenly hear an engine. Look up from our banging to see a Jeep Wagoneer, Mom & Pop, Buffy, Jodie and Sissy sitting in the back, all staring at our rutting. Funny stuff.

Couldn't tell you. I have to admit that I was pretty surprised to see 442 badging on a Vista Cruiser. I'm not even sure if Olds made them or if someone slapped some after market badges on the "beachwagon" :dhd:

I did look it up after my last comment and it seems highly unlikely that one of them found its way to a gas station in Epping, NH on a winter morning 50+ years later.

The one I saw was clean, but not show car polished and had the correct hood and rallye rims, but I couldn't tell if it was a 4 speed (the 2nd 4 in 4-4-2) or had the big block 455. The W-30 suspension package would have been available to anyone with a few extra bucks to spend, but that is the not the sole determinant of whether an Olds Cutlass is a true 4-4-2.

The "4-4-2" name (pronounced "Four-four-two") derives from the original car's four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, and dual exhausts

With the GTO receiving GM corporate sanction to receive their full-sized car's 389 V-8, Oldsmobile followed suit and replaced the 4-4-2's standard 330 CID with the new 400 CID (6.6 L). The definition of "4-4-2" was then restated as referring to 400 cubic inches, a 4 barrel carburetor (a 515 cfm Rochester 4-Jet), 2 exhausts.

Oldsmobile could always get plenty of power out of their engines, when they had a mind to.

Their 350's they put in almost all of the Cutlass's, I knew, were stout drivetrains.

Did a decent job of keeping up with the pontiac 400 engines.

I read the same wiki entry that you copied that from and it is not entirely accurate. The W-30 handling package is the only option that determines a true 4-4-2. Multiple engine options rolled off the line over the years including 330c.i., 350c.i., 400c.i. & 455c.i. big blocks.

I know that I contradicted an earlier post, but I took the time to refresh my memory and it is in fact the W-30 handling package that appears to be the one constant. Engine sizes varied and even the 4 speed tranny was not a requirement in the later years.

Yes, it started with 4 barrel, 4 speed, 2 exhaust but came to mean just a badge package as time went on.
