AI without any doubt whatsoever - the team he took to the finals was basically him and a bunch of parts

He took over games and being one of the smallest guys in the league, the beating he took and the fact that he was able to continue to keep going for many years, that shows how great he really was

I thought this was about their PEAK.

McGrady had a very small but spectacular peak.

Iverson had a better career, b0ut the OP asked about their peak ability.

It was not who had longer periods of success.

At T-Mac's peak, he still wasn't able to take his team to the Finals - AI's peak was probably around the time he made the Finals, right? And that team had a lot of role players on it and he took them all the way to the Finals

Peak statistical seasons (once again OP asked about their peak):

Iverson 24.0 PER, TS 52%, EFG 45%, 11.8 win shares, 31.1ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.6apg, 42% FG
McGrady 30.3 PER, TS 57%, EFG 51%, 16.1 Win shares, 32.1ppg, 6.5 rpg, 5.5apg, 45% FG

30.3 PER is scary good.
Iverson always played at about 99.99999% and gave it his all in non-practice games.
T-MAC always seemed to give about 80% for whatever reason.

Iverson ended up being a much better player when you account for career breadth.
But, I always thought no player in modern league history had a higher ceiling than T-MAC.

We only got a small tease of what he could do when at 100%.
But, at his peak ability, he was almost unmatched.

AI in my Op.

Yeah, I'd have to go with Iverson - at least he took his team to the finals. He had the bad luck in running into Shaq and Kobe at their peak and didn't have enough support. McGrady spent to much time with injuries and surgeries

Both were so much fun to watch in their prime. Not going to find a player like AI for a long, long time. T-Mac's 13 points in 35 seconds remains one of the best regular season games of all-time.

If TMac had stayed healthy, it would have been him.

But he didn't and it's definitely Iverson.

^^^THIS^^^

I was never a T-Mac fan. But if he had stayed healthy, this thread would likely be asking who was better, T-Mac or Kobe and it may have ended up favoring T-Mac.

Never was an A.I. fan either, but damn was he fun to watch. Dude had no fear.

Statistically, TMAC had the better "peak" season than AI.

McGrady 30.3 PER, TS 57%, EFG 51%, 16.1 Win shares, 32.1ppg, 6.5 rpg, 5.5apg, 45% FG

That's good stuff. Given the premise of this thread, TMAC was better at his "peak".

Is this comparison a joke? Iverson carried a team to the NBA finals. McGrady never did squat.

It always seems to come down to the could have or should have if he had with players like McGrady. McGrady had the best center in the NBA with Yao Ming, and yet still never came close to the NBA and the two played together in an era where a Batman and Robin worked well. I never liked Iverson as a person and I liked McGrady as a person, but he simply never succeeded which is unfortunate. Iverson had the better career and sucesses

You're comparing an all-time great to a player who strung together a couple of great seasons...

I'm not comparing their overall career. :L

There's a disturbing amount of posters on this thread who don't seem to understand what the word 'peak' means...
