I always find it amusing when people think managers all the sudden "learn" how to win right around the same time they also happen to get an infusion of good players. Banister had nothing to play with at the beginning of the season. His pitching staff was full of injured question marks, unproven rookies, and aging veterans. Sure, he was a new manager, but he's been around the game and wouldn't have been given the chance to run a major league roster if he wasn't a guy who knew how the game was played. Banister's not just some guy Daniels found from the want ads in the local paper.

He's done a hell of a job the whole year--even when he had awful players. He could've easily said, "Oh fuck it. We suck. Let's wait for next year." But he didn't. He kept the guys motivated and did the best he could with what he had. He used the tough times as character building moments. Baseball is such a mental game. I'd say most of a manager's job is to keep the players' heads in the right place psychologically. Banister has done a masterful job with that.

But as the great Winston Wolf said, "Let's not start sucking each other's dicks quite yet." We still have to clinch.

He's made some head-scratching moves irregardless of the talent level, but overall I' say he's done a good job and has shown improvement as the year has progressed Napoli in LF against a RHP is still always a terrible idea

So if we win tonight do you think they get the champagne out?

They wont --- Josh is on the team. They'll do ginger-ale.
But no, save it for when the division is clinched.

Rangers would have won the division three weeks ago had Darvish been healthy.

Had Darvish been healthy the whole season would have transpired differently. Maybe we don't have Hamels then.

Right. But had we had Wash we'd be 20 games back?

I'm not sure 20 games back but I'm not sure we'd be in the same position we're in right now. While Banny has made weird moves I think he's handled bullpen, lineups etc really well for what he's had to work with.
