Since I was in grad school at this time... I remember this season well. Those were some ugly losses... just not as huge a run up of scores back then as there are today.

73-42 seems so much worse than 48-16. Doesn't it?

Back then we were expected to lose. Two years later we got our first big taste of success and it has not been the same ever since.

Seeing that the 73-42 could have been 120-14 had Baylor kept playing...............

Same with the loss to Miami back in 1986. As the author of the article wrote, the Miami players were all on the sideline with their pads off signing autographs after half.

I was at that game, there was a large forest fire going on in the southern part of the state, it was a surreal scene... watching the Mounties look inept under a smoky sky.

Yes, the '86 season was dismal. But since Nehlen's arrival in '80, the Mountaineers had been successful and had a 9-3, 8-4 finish and we assumed we were not going back to where we were. Hell, we had finally beaten Penn St. I still remember that celebration - the police came to my friends house it got so out of hand.

Then '86 and I remember the talk that we were reverting to our natural state of success and that Nehlen's run was nice, but it was back to reality. Then this kid with the funny name of Major Harris shows up and 2 years later we are playing Notre Dame in the NCG.

Funny how fast it all can change. One can only hope.....
