Lions GM Bob Quinn said "it's really good football business" to draft a quarterback "every year or every other year."

"There’s such a value in the position and nowadays in college football there’s a lot of spread offenses, which means it’s a lot different than pro football," Quinn said. "So it takes these young quarterbacks time to develop. So if you can add a young quarterback every year or every other year to your roster, it’s good football business in my mind." Matthew Stafford is locked in as the starter, but it would be smart for the Lions to add a developmental option behind him and aging backup Dan Orlovsky. It would be a surprise if Quinn did not dip into the quarterback pool on the third day of the draft.

I've been saying this for years.....

Draft a developmental QB with a good arm in those middle to late rounds almost every year. The league is so QB starved that those picks can turn into solid investments that turn into 3rd, 2nd or maybe even a 1st rounder down the road.

Instead Mini Millen kept deciding to roll with no talent scrubs like Orvlosky who will never fetch jack shit and blowing mid round picks on guys like Gabe Wright, Alex Carter, Doug Houge and Jonte Green. Fringe NFL talents that are likely to be out of the league in a few years and MAYBE could develop into backup, depth type guys.

Whats worse is Gabe was not even a late round pick. Traded up in the 3rd to get him. Never know though, the light switch could go on for him this year. Of course we can always give credit to Austin if it does.

We've seen it too many times. GMs desperate for a QB will do stupid shit for an unproven one.

If Wentz or Goff fell to 16, take the sonuvabitch. Within two years someone will offer something stupid for him.

A QB that should be an earlier round pick that falls into the later rounds is what you want. No sense in picking another depth guy late if you can do that and trade him in a few years. its basically like trading a late round this year for an early round in a future year.

Traded to get him in the fourth round. They traded up for Carter in the third. Both trades were head scratchers though.

I was hoping for someone in the 3rd-5th round and possibly getting a 1st or 2nd rounder in a year or so.

IMO he will have to get some playing time in year two/three to showcase his stock for a trade that good. Which would mean Stafford going down so that won't be good either.

Sometimes, even if a guy tears it up in preseason and another GM was high on that prospect coming out of college. They may give up a second rounder..... Life is stranger than fiction sometimes.

This dude is already proving to be much smarter than the Millen twins.

Pats have always done it just the opposite. Many contracts front loaded and few restructures.

You mean they don't like losing franchise players in free agency? lol

They let guys walk more than you think. Look at the 3rd and 4th comp picks they receive often. That's letting good players walk. They're are just smart and build depth within to have a replacement in place.

Hell, we are Lions fans.... We are never happy.

More a tongue and cheek about wanting Mayhew gone, yet already scoffing at a new guys moves. He office furniture is still on order...

He's starting to give glimpses of his vision. Not exactly what I wanted, but I wanted change and got it.

Correct.

They are also very good at knowing when said good players are about to hit the wall. Not perfect, but good. Hopefully Quinn has inherited some of that.

You mean Quinn would of picked Aaron Donald instead of Eric Ebron?
