In PQS, we give a starting pitcher credit for exhibiting certain skills in each of his starts. Then by tracking his "PQS Score" over time, we can follow his progress. A starter earns one point for each of the following criteria...

1. The pitcher must have gone a minimum of 6 innings. This measures stamina. If he goes less than 5 innings, he automatically gets a total PQS score of zero, no matter what other stats he produces.

2. He must have allowed no more than an equal number of hits to the number of IP. This measures hit prevention.

3. His number of strikeouts must be no fewer than two less than his innings pitched. This measures dominance.

4. He must have struck out at least twice as many batters as he walked. This measures command.

5. He must have allowed no more than one home run. This measures his ability to keep the ball in the park.

So for Vogey tonight he gets 1 + 1+ 0 + 0 + 1 = 3.

PQS of 0, 1 is a "disaster"
PQS of 2, 3 is a "middle"
PQS of 4, 5 is "dominant."

We're gonna need a bigger boat...Giants win 5-0 vs. D- Backs as Friday gets a day closer

It was kind of a nasty night with almost like hurricane winds blowing in that made HR''s take a rain check and stay within the confines of AT&T Park. This was a battle of will's and with the D-Backs near the end of a tough road trip and the Giants flying high with hope and hunger it was only a matter of time before the Giants could get a big hit or two and win that battle.

Ryan Vogelsong is a inspiration not only to his teammates but to fans all over the country. The guy refuses to give up and go away. His desire to win and do his very best can not be measured with stats or any kind of numbers you want to throw at him. Vogelsong has been to the end of the earth and back to stay in the game and his persistence has paid off as he has become a Champion. He battled like he always battles again tonight going 6 2/3 innings giving up 0 ER on 2 H , 5 spread out walks , and 3 SO, on 102 pitches.Did he have his best stuff?.....No. He would tell you that himself but he finds a way to get it done and that is what makes a MLB player. He gave the boys a chance to win and that is all teammates want...a chance.

The offense had trouble with Collmenter who had a tough change up going for him tonight. Collmenter kept the D-Backs close as he went 6 shutout innings only giving up 3 hits. Then it was lucky number 7 inning again for the Giants as someone threw some chum in the water and the Jaws theme music began to play. Pence walked and after a tough strike 2 call on Blanco the Great White Shark chewed on a inside pitch and lined it down the line in right and Pence who looked like a shark was chasing him in the ocean swam for his life home for the first run which turned out to be the game winner. Duffy came in as a PH and lined a key double to right to give the Giants a 2 run lead. The kid had a smile going from ear to ear like he just asked the head cheerleader to the prom and she said ...YES.

The Giants tacked on 3 more runs and the bullpen was strong going 2 1/3 clean innings. Another great night as the energy stays high in the city by the bay. There is no looking past Arizona tomorrow as Alabama 22 Peavy takes the hill and his intensity can burn a hole threw steel. A key game as if the Giants win the Dodgers lead shrinks to 2 games in the West but a loss drops them 3 games back. It's like gaining a whole game with a win so it's ballz out but also staying loose and the Giants are very loose.

In SF we don't have a bandwagon but the boat is filling up with believers in McCovey Cove. I think we're gonna need a bigger boat by the time the Dodgers get here for the funnest ride in the greatest city in the World.
