I think they are pretty close to not worrying about what 'hurts' this year in favor of the long term. Sure they hope to get lucky, but if any decision helps 2015 at the expense of 2016+, it ain't happening.

This team does not look like it has the starting pitching to be a contender, barring a miracle Cain and/or Peavy return to 5 years ago form. There are difference makers out there, and if they really needed to they could get one, but it would definitely impair 2016+ so I think they pass.

As tzill pointed out, this is not a desperate franchise that needs to go all in to win something now. They got a dynasty to run here!
