Buster Posey leaves game in fifth inning - Giants Extra

MIAMI – Buster Posey, the player the Giants can least afford to lose, left Wednesday night’s game in the fifth inning at Marlins Park.

The club didn’t immediately announce why Andrew Susac replaced Posey with the Giants trailing 3-2. But it might be related to the fact that Posey took a foul ball off the mask in the second inning.

The Giants already are trying to stay afloat while dealing with the absence of outfielder Hunter Pence and Nori Aoki. They can’t afford to lose Posey, their catcher and cleanup hitter, who just set a personal best for RBIs in a month.

Susac is the only other catcher on the 25-man roster. If the Giants need another receiver, they’ll have a hard time getting one to Marlins Park in time for Thursday’s game. It’s scheduled to begin at 9:10 PDT.

Oddly enough, the club’s emergency third catcher was Casey McGehee, who was designated for assignment on Tuesday. McGehee caught in the minors for the Chicago Cubs. Joaquin Arias is the likely emergency catcher now.

Incredible. The Giants for so long have favored fly-ball pitchers. With this infield defense though, a sinker-baller can thrive. In Heston, and our top prospects Beede and Mella, we have some guys who will pound the ground.
