As it stands through 47 games, I think we know who we are. We have a strong and deep rotation, now that Hicks is in the bullpen:
1. Webb
2. Ray
3. Bird
4. Roupp
5. JV
6. Harry
7. Whiz
8. Seymour
9. Black
10. McDonald

Our bullpen is probably the best in baseball:
1. RanRod
2. Rogers
3. Miller
4. Doval
5. Harry (for now)
6. Bivens
7. Walker
8. Hicks

Our defense is generally solid to elite
1. Bales
2. Chap
3. Fitz
4. Lee
5. Yaz
6. Adames
7. Matos
8. Ramos
9. LWJ

But, it's the hitting that will decide whether we contend or not, and right now we only have these guys who are legitimate ML hitters:

1. Ramos
2. Yaz
3. Fitz
4. Lee
5. Wilmer
6. Chap

I note that Adames is one hot streak from climbing into respectable. However, Villar/Koss/Matos/LWJ/Huff/Bales are all below average to terrible. Schmitt and Wise might also be terrible but they are SSS. So the question is: where do we upgrade? We have three legit OF, two legit IF plus a guy making a ton of cash. That leaves essentially 1B and C. Eldridge is tearing it up in a pitchers league, but he's still a year away at best. We have a bunch of decent AAA hitters but nobody forcing the Giants hand. We should have Carney back soon, and he's been playing 1B in Sacto.

Catcher will be more tricky, as there is nothing in the minors that would improve the situation in SF. Stassi might be a slight improvement over Huff, but he's not a difference maker. So it seems that we either hope Bales figures it out or we trade for someone. I'm just not sure there is much out there to get. Assuming doyers/M's/Yankass/Philth/Brewers/Asstros aren't selling:

1. Goodman - This would be the guy to get, but the Rox not likely to trade within the division.
2. O'Hoppe - Another guy to get...the Halos would need to fall out of contention.
3. Langeliers - same as O'Hoppe...A'ss need to fall out of it.
4. Bart - too weird to even contemplate
5. Ruiz - a small upgrade; could be a target.
6. Rutschman -- another small upgrade and possible target
7. Teel -- ChiSox will want a lot for him
8. Quero - Brewers would demand a lot as well.
9. Ballesteros -- Cubs might deal; price would be high.

And that's about it. The good thing is that we have a GM who knows a little bit about the position. IBWT

Per Sluss:

Verlander won’t detail what he was dealing with but he wasn’t totally right physically. He said the coaches and trainers knew and it was nothing that would create more problems. His velocity was down 3 mph.

Maybe a trip to the IL and Harry gets his shot??

Nice overview of the team right now. One quibble is that Villar's numbers are about as SSS as Schmitt and Wisely. However, the bench and two infield spots are black holes offensively right now. Definitely seems like a couple of areas to upgrade at the trading deadline.

good point. VR doesn't look like an answer in any event.

Ramos OTOH since 4/14:
.297 xBA (88th percentile)
.562 xSLG (91st percentile)
.397 xwOBA (92nd percentile)
47.8% hard-hit rate (73rd percentile)
14.4% barrel rate (82nd percentile)
18.6% K rate (61st percentile)

Giants clearly think so, since he got dfa'd today. Schmitt is curious replacement though. Seems redundant to have both Schmitt and Koss on the roster.

One will be gone as soon as Carney is ready.
