How long do the I's have to wait before THEY DFA him, now? If they just wanted him in the org, not a bad idea to claim him then DFA him immediately.

I think if you claim someone on waivers, you have to add him to your 25 man roster. If the I's DFA him, then they have to either a) trade him; b) release him; or c) waive him. If he's released, the Giants, any team can sign him. If he's waived, the I's would have to wait for him to clear waivers before assigning him to the minors.

I understand this to be the rule as well (as far as the 25-man portion, that is only because he has no options left).

But if they like him, they could claim him, them DFA him. They have a few days now to talk him into staying in their org. If they do not claim him, he likely re-ups immediately with the G's, and the I's never get a shot.

I am not saying this is happening. This is just an exercise in roster strategy...

I see what you're saying, but the I's would still have to do a bit of roster juggling for what is essentially the 12th arm on the staff.

If you claim someone on waivers, you have to add him to your 40 man roster. But all option and waiver rules will apply - if the player is out of options, you can't send him to the minors without having him pass through waivers (he doesn't HAVE to be outrighted {DFA'd}, but he would have to pass through waivers if no options are left).

I'm not sure that's right, Marco. It would be to the disadvantage of the team waiving the player if it was not able to move a player from the 25 man to the 40 but another team could subsequently take him and place him in the minors.

I may be wrong, but that doesn't make sense to me.

the 25 is part of the 40, tz.

If we were to DFA Burriss, for example, a claiming team would have to place him on the 25 and could not send him to the minors since he is out of options. However, if we were to DFA Culby, the claiming team COULD place him in their minors since he still has options.

OK, I didn't explain that well. A player claimed off waivers is "in the same state" as when he was claimed off waivers. By definition, a guy placed on ANY waivers is on the 40-man. If said player was on the active roster of the old team, then he is "momentarily" on the active (25-man) roster of the new team. BUT the new team can immediately assign him to a minor league team (so, he doesn't "really" take up any room on the new team's 25-man roster). Any restrictions (mostly because of service time and options) transfer with the player. So if the player was out of options on the old team, then he is still out of options with the new team and must pass through waivers to be sent to the new team's minor league system.

A player who was in the minors when DFA'd (which is quite possible, and even common) would not have to be placed on the new team's active roster, and would not have to pass through waivers to be sent to the new team's minor league system. He would simply have to be added to the new team's 40-man roster. (And if there wasn't room, the new team would have to make room on the 40-man roster.)
