Did the Chargers 1st team defense start the game?

Kevin Acee, the Chargers lead beat writer, said that it was "predominately" the Chargers real starting defense. He said the same thing about the 49ers starting offense as well but Gore, Crabtree and Moss (and Manningham for that matter) were all out, so I don't know how credible that is. Granted he knows their team better.
