49ers sign tight end Justin Peelle (Dublin High)

The 49ers have addressed their need for a third tight end (specifically, a blocking one) by signing nine-year veteran Justin Peelle, a Dublin High School product.

Peelle was released by the Atlanta Falcons last month, reportedly reaching an injury settlement (knee). He played the past three seasons with the Falcons, the prior two with the Miami Dolphins and his first four seasons in San Diego as Antonio Gates’ understudy.

Peelle has been given (drumroll, please) uniform No. 81, previously worn by Braylon Edwards in the exhibition season and more famously by some other wide receiver from 1996-2003 who’s initials were T.O.

Look for Peelle to primarily serve as a blocking tight end behind starter Vernon Davis and H-back Delanie Walker. To make room for Peelle on the 53-man roster, the 49ers released safety Colin Jones, a sixth-round draft pick who is eligible for the practice squad.

In 137 career games (66 starts), Peelle has 122 receptions for 984 yards and 12 touchdowns. He had 10 catches for 96 yards in 13 games last season while being hampered by a sports hernia.

Peelle attended Oregon from 1997-2001 before the Chargers selected him in the fourth round of the 2002 draft. He and his wife, Sara, sponsor a student-athlete scholarship at Dublin High.

Good signing.

Peelle is a good veteran receiving tight end, and an ok blocker.

Per Maiocco: The 49ers worked out free-agent TE Richard Quinn (North Carolina) on Tuesday.

Hmm interesting.

Maybe Peelle is done.

I remember him as a good 2nd TE on the Chargers and the Falcons, behind Gates and Crumpler or maybe Gonzo?

I dont know too much about him. Edwards will be missing a game or two. maybe they want to add a recieving tight end. Unless they get rid of Peelle too then im not sure.
