Conference Projections, 6/1/2012

Remember, this is entirely conjecture based on the tone that I have heard and what I take from it and is subject to change a bunch of times. There will be 20 different versions of this and 500 rumors before it is all done. 2014 appears to be THE year. The BCS needs to decide how the final four will be selected. The four conference model appears to be dead in the water for now. Expect the ACC to survive and five conferences to be the major players. Four of the champions will make it to a playoff. That playoff will be expanded to eight in the near future.

These are my projections based on the FIVE conference system:

B1G
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Wisconsin
Penn State
Nebraska
Indiana
Northwestern
Iowa
Illinois
Purdue
Minnesota
Notre Dame (50%)

SEC
Alabama
Auburn
LSU
Ole Miss
Mississippi State
Arkansas
aTm
South Carolina
Florida
Tennessee
Georgia
Vanderbilt
Kentucky
Missouri

Big XII
Texas
Texas Tech
Baylor
TCU
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Kansas
Kansas State
Iowa State
West Virginia
Louisville (60%)
Cincinnati (60%)

Pac 12
Cal
USC
UCLA
Stanford
Arizona
Arizona St.
Oregon
Oregon St.
Washington
Washington St.
Utah
San Diego State (10%)
Air Force (10%)

ACC
Boston College
Maryland
Virginia Tech
Virginia
Wake Forest
NC State
UNC
Duke
Georgia Tech
Clemson
FSU
Miami
Pittsburgh
Syracuse
UCONN (25%)
Rutgers (25%)

The ultimate goal is to go to 80 teams but it is unclear how that will be and I am not confident in making any rushes to judgment yet on that, other than the few that I have added in. I cannot go to 80 right now with anything other than total guesses.

Also, the playoff will be taking conference champions, not the top 4 ranked.

well, on the one hand...this set up would give us an easier road to the playoffs...on the otherhand, if the ACC is going to add people, lets add some quality football teams damn it!

also i think Bob Molinaro from the Virginian Pilot reads the Hoop:

With realignment, facts are no obstacle to chatter | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com

"Except for the denizens of message boards, people - even most sportswriters - don't spend precious time waiting for the next realignment shoe to drop. What happens will happen. In the meantime, rumors are tedious."

i generally read his pieces, but hate to read them...he's such a smug, cynical little fuck.

"First off, just repeating what I was told here. I was given permission to post this. I'm not saying this is a done deal or anything like that. This comes from ACC country with connections to both the NCST and GT Athletic Departments. From what I can tell, legit connections. I'm just passing this along for discussion purposely only, not claiming this is happening.

Word out of GT is that it's "common knowledge" (their choice of word) in some high ACC circles that FSU and Clemson are leaving for the Big 12. They used the word "lock". This is apparently also known in the NCST AD. GT is currently talking to both the Big 12 and B1G, and their fate, I was told, rests with Notre Dame. I was told that Notre Dame has "shot down" (again, their choice of words) the B1G and isn't going to the ACC. So apparently it's the Big 12. Notre Dame, so I was told, wants to work it out with NBC so they can join the Big 12 sooner than 2015. The thinking is that way they (ND) could join the Big 12 next year (that what I was told; I'm assuming Olympic sports at first, but didn't get that confirmed) and use the NBC contract for their Tier 3 part of the TV contracts.

So the perceived "delays" (as we see them) in regards to moving on FSU and Clemson are because ND is exploring some options with NBC regarding their current deal and what can be done, or so I was told.

Regarding NCST. they are talking with the SEC along with VT, which we pretty much figured. I was given nothing about possible UNC talks in relation to the SEC, only that NCST is actively talking with them. This information comes (supposedly) from an NCST AD employee who didn't believe all the realignment talk and when he looked into it, found out it was all real.

I say again, I make not claims on any of this information. The folks I have spoken with have every appearance of being legit, so I have no reason to just dismiss this information out of hand. I don't necessarily believe it (anything with ND is hard to believe), but let's discuss the possibilities here and agree that no one believes this and that I get no internet fame points for posting this. Again, I was given permission to post this from the folks who contacted me.

It could all be garbage or it could be gold. I'm not making any judgment nor asking anyone else to believe or disbelieve it. It's just another bit of information, coming from other places that seems to tie into some other things we've heard/seen/posted.

But there is an awful lot of smoke to the Notre Dame fire. I honestly believe if they go anywhere, it will be the Big 12.

But that's what I have. As usual, I won't divulge who I got it from, but it was a completely surprise to me and leads me to believe we have a lot of prying eyes here on this board. Let's just say that Higher Education is a funny place sometimes."

Are you saying the B1G stops at 13 or that you're not sure who the other(s) is/are?

I don't like this update for a couple of reasons.

A) Virginia Tech is still in the ACC. I'm ready for VT to jump ship and I still expect them to do so. In my opinion, Tech has plateaued in the ACC - just as the ACC has plateaued as a league in general. I still would like to see Virginia Tech in the B1G.

B) The ACC additions aren't spectacular. I have posited for a long time Pitt, UConn, Syracuse, and Rutgers as the ACC expansion candidates, but the more I think about it, the more I'm underwhelmed by the idea of it. Pitt and Syracuse are OK additions to the football side of this move, but UConn and Rutgers don't raise the bar from those two. So what the ACC is left with is a mediocre football conference adding four mediocre teams. It almost seems like they would be expanding just for the sake of survival with no real direction of improvement. That's disappointing.

C) Teams like Boise State are conspicuously absent. In this model, I would hope that the top tier of mid-major teams would be able to join one of the Big-5 conferences. There's no reason for Boise State, UNLV, Nevada, etc...to not at least get a look from other conferences.

Boise has a better chance of getting into the Pac than San Diego State. I can safely say SDSU will never be in the Pac12.

From what I have heard talking to people, if the Pac was forced to add schools right now. They would add San Diego. Now there has to be some time for San Diego to move up and round off their athletics but I would not be surprised at all if San Diego was a Pac member by 2022.

One school that I have heard that makes no sense, but I guess the Northern California schools seem to be pushing for is Rice. There seems to be a Movement to not go after Athletic schools anymore and for more after Academic schools.
