Redskins common concepts: Four verticals - The Washington Post
Excerpt
Concept
Four Verticals, or four ‘verts’, is a relatively simple concept at its core. Essentially, you have four receivers run vertical routes down the field. It’s designed to be particularly effective against zone defenses that rely on two or three deep zone defenders. In theory, two or three deep zone defenders shouldn’t be able to cover four receivers running deep, meaning the quarterback should always have one receiver open.
Success rate
The Redskins had a good degree of success with this concept. They ran it a total of 48 times throughout last season, completing 24 of those plays for 491 yards and four touchdowns. Washington quarterbacks threw 14 incomplete passes running four verticals, though three of those drew penalties from the defense. They were intercepted three times and sacked six times. There was also a seven-yard gain on a quarterback scramble.
