The rule is pretty simple. I didn't like the change, but players need to adapt. To be fair, changing something that you have been taught to do since little league (in a split second) will be hard.

He also slightly deviated his path. I think the key is that didn't try to stay on the bag.

Upon closer inspection, the umpires ruled that Jose Bautista had interfered with Forsythe by grabbing his back foot. That's against the rules -- and not just the new rules -- and so Encarnacion was also ruled out, thereby ending the game and handing the Rays their first win of the season.

Speaking of firsts, this might've been the first time this year a slide had unintended consequences for a team, but don't bet on it being the last.
