TV Ratings: Super Bowl XLVIII Is Most Watched in History With 111.5 Million Viewers

UPDATED: Contrary to early returns, the game ends up topping the 2012 outing by 200,000 viewers to become the biggest show ever to air on U.S. TV.

Final ratings are in for the 2014 Super Bowl -- and, contrary to early returns, which saw the game ranking fifth all-time, the NFL season finale ended up being the biggest to date. An average 111.5 million viewers tuned in to see the Seattle Seahawks blow the Denver Broncos out of the water, making it the most watched Super Bowl and the most watched program in U.S. television history.

That's up 3 million from last year's Super Bowl, which averaged 108.4 million viewers. That game, between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers, though close, suffered an audience drop when a power outage halted the game for 30 minutes.

I'd be interested to see the hour by hour breakdown of this.

I'm sure the ratings were high to start, but in the 3rd quarter when the Seahawks made it 29-0, I'd be hard pressed to believe 111.5 million were still watching.

It does say it was an average the ratings actually peeked at halftime 115.3 million viewers.

I'm sure you're right, but I remember when SB's got boring and we had zero rooting interest we would still just leave the game on and either go outside or start playing drinking games. I'd bet in the 4th quarter it was still pulling historic numbers.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Last year was the first in 5 that didn't break the previous record and it was close. The SB is so much more than the game itself. There are parties all over North America and even non fans tune in to watch. It's an entertainment event that is unmatched on television. And btw, what teams are in it doesn't matter in the least, regardless of what New Yorkers and the rest of the east coast believe.

This number goes up just about every year. I'm sure the numbers were about half in the second half. From what I have heard from non-football sources, Rupert Murdoch was not a happy guy after the game.
