I remember that as well. I was a young kid. We watched the landing and I wanted to touch the guy on the moon. I ran up to the tv and slapped the screen with both hands. The TV was on a flimsy TV rolling cart. It went over and busted some tubes (yes TVs had tubes). We left our house and went next door to continue watching. After replacing the tubes the tv always had a problem with the part of the picture being upside down.

Great story Dave! and yes TV's did have tubes years ago. Do you remember the "tube tester" machines that were in some store's?

Damn I feel old!!

Hell ya. The was a TV/appliance store practically right across the street were I grew up. I remember my parents bringing the TV there to be repaired. It's funny when I tell kids these days how everything was done by hand on the TV (turning it on, changing channels, fixing the rabbit ears because there was no cable or satellite). Yeah, we're getting old.

We had a great big TV, one that sat on its own (console), and the color would go out on it. We'd stomp our feet in certain parts of the room and the color would come back on.

I was in 5th grade watching in the classroom with about 50 other students. I remember it was a big deal because Christa McAuliffe was to be the first teacher in space or something like that. I think it was the first time ever watching a shuttle launch too.

After the explosion we where all crying and wondering what happened. I still remember it clearly and still it brings chills.

As far as being old enough to remember, I remember the first man on the moon. :)

I actually have the newspaper from this. my mom saved it and gave it to me a couple years ago. its pretty mint condition.

Oh yeah. My dad used to send me to Thrifty Drug Store with a paper bag with tubes to test and 10.10 cash. I would go to the back of the store and test the tubes and if one failed the 10.00 was for buying new tubes. the 0.10 was for a double scoop ice cream cone.

I was freshman in High School at the time. I remember it very well. We had one of our own up there which made it more meaningful for us in Hawaii. The teachers stopped classes and turned on the TV's to watch the news. My heart goes out to all the Astronauts and their family's.

I was a senior.
In physics class I believe
did the same. School stopped and TV's were turned on.

Mmmmm, Thirfty's ice cream was the best. It was 10 cents when I was a kid but I think it was something like 50 cents or a dollar.

I was 21 days from birth when Challenger was destroyed. So I obviously do not remember it. I first remember hearing about it in either 7th or 8th grade in science class we watched a documentary on it. Obviously it didn't have nearly the effect that it would have for someone watching it live. I never really thought about it after the class was over. Comparing to something similar, even though I didn't see it live, the Columbia disaster just seems much more "real" to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say that Challenger wasn't a tragedy or that the people on it meant less, it's just that I was alive when Columbia disintegrated so that event had much more of an impact on my life than Challenger ever could.

Totally off-topic:

My dad the day MLK was murdered...Pops was a student at college standing up at a podium reading some of his own stuff when a guy came bursting through the doors yelling, "Martin Luther King Jr has just been shot!" My father banged his fist a couple of times on the podium to restore order and said, "Hey! I'm reading a poem up here!" :L:L:L:L

I was only two at the time so I don't have any recollection. All these stories about watching it live at school reminded me of the one time any of my teachers stopped class to let us watch something: The O.J. Simpson verdict.
