I think it is a BPA pick. And it tells me that we like the depth of the RB class. Now, I could very much see us trying to move up tomorrow for our preferred RB.

I think Payton saw how much we struggled when Moss went down and our lack of depth and wanting to change fix that.
Ile teams we see twice a year get MASSIVE upgrades at RB, which is our weakest point on defense.

First time since we hired Paton I really think he effed up on an Ed Reed level. And Im a horn fan.

I'm sure it was a BPA pick and Payton knows the team better than we do. However and as a fan, I can't deny that I'm disappointed. Hampton was sitting right there and now he's a Charger. I support the decision and the team but I just don't like it to be honest. Please move up in round 2 and get Henderson.

From The Athletic:

but seconds after selecting Barron, the newest member of the Broncos did something that immediately endeared him to his new organization — something Payton had not experienced in his dozens of draft nights over the years.

“He politely asked, ‘When we’re finished (talking), could you guys put me on speakerphone,’” Payton said. “After he finished (talking) with (owner) Greg Penner, we put him on speakerphone and he thanked everyone in the room for the process. He talked about his mother and his journey. I’ve never had that happen.”

Payton smiled as he told the story. No need to hide their affinity for Barron anymore.

Personally I really like the pick. While I fully expected a RB, I can't say I am disappointed. Our secondary looks very stout right now. The lack of depth here was one of the bigger weaknesses and they've addressed that. I understand there's a lot of depth at RB in this draft so there is still a lot of time to address that position. But this pick really brings our defense to completion. This roster is as complete a roster as you will find on defense in the NFL. It should be a very good unit in 25.

Baltimore does this every year. BPA when you draft in the 20s. This kid is a top 10 talent. Could be another Budda Baker?

There is a reason they have been one of the most consistent franchises in the NFL. They don't panic. They just let everyone else make the mistakes ahead of them reaching for need to then take a player no one expected to be there when they pick.

And I still think CB was/is a bigger need than people want to admit. December was a really really bad month for this defense. Moss down with injury they got destroyed. I love Moss but he was injured in college and now has been injured both years in the NFL. I don't trust that he will make it through an entire season and do we really want a repeat of the Levi Wallace situation?

Beyond that because Barron can play all over the field and be productive there are plenty of ways to get him on the field and let him work.

Najee was a first-round pick for Pitts now with the Chargers.. Now Hampton was picked around the same spot as Najee. I'm not that up in arms about 1st round RBs.

Heck look at the top RB's in football right now. The team that drafted them is not the team they are on. Barkley now on the Eagles and Henry on the Ravens. I would also add there are a ton of teams right now that are putting their top RB on the market because the RB has had trouble living up to where they were drafted. Breece Hall, Kenneth Walker, James Cook, Travis Etienne are some names that all have been floated as available for trade.

I also think RB is a position where the transition from college to the NFL is a little more smooth than at CB. Hence a higher profile CB may truly have been a greater need than RB, given the board is still full of plenty of backs who can come in and elevate the RB room. I didn't expect this but I seriously cannot find a reason to complain. This is a great pick. This defense is going to be ridiculous this year.

After a night to sleep on it, I'm definitely in a better place with the Broncos pick. They got tremendously high value with Barron and our defense is going to win us some games in the upcoming season. I was most disappointed that Hampton went to the Chargers but as many have pointed out, first round running backs don't have a strong history of success.

The thing I like the most is you can tell how happy Payton and Paton are with the pick. That usually translates to great things.

We've definitely seen RB's throughout the draft make immediate impacts in the NFL. Heck best RB from last year's class was a 4th rounder in Bucky Irving. In 2022 you could make the case that Kyren Williams is the best RB from that class in the 5th round. I don't think taking Henderson or Hampton in the 1st would have been a bad idea by any means, just more if there is a position that you can have some patience at and still find a guy it is RB especially when you have a draft that looks this good at the position.
