Nebraska currently has 16 commits in a class that looks primed to take 24-25 names for this class. We've been following the drama all off season but now Nebraska will be seeking to use official visits and a good season to lock up the rest of the class.
This list is going to reflect who it seems to me Nebraska is most pursuing at the moment, not necessarily the most likely to commit, but the whole "in an ideal world" scenario these are the names I think they would like to end up with.
1. Chris Hickman (4-Star, TE) [Omaha, NE] - Hickman, like his teammate Henrich, didn't even have Nebraska in the top group with the last staff but Frost and company have done yeo-man's work in securing Henrich's commitment which seems to have moved Hickman closer to pulling the trigger as well.
2. Owen Pappoe (5-Star, OLB) [Loganville, GA] - Pappoe was a name with the last staff that looked like he loved the idea of Nebraska and always had the Huskers in his top group, even with this current staff. He already spurned the local greats (Georgia) in favor of Auburn but Nebraska continues to stay in the mix. Having teammate Ronald Thompkins in the 2019 class helps Nebraska as well as Owen has been quoted as saying he plans on visiting along with his talented teammate.
3. Jameson Williams (4-Star, WR) [St. Louis, MO] - St. Louis hasn't been great to Nebraska in recent years but Nebraska would really like to snag Williams from the state. Nebraska is current;y in Williams' top 5 and perhaps only behind Ohio State. Depending on what happens in Buckeye land with Urban Meyer under fire Nebraska could move up the board quickly. Williams OV'd at OSU in June and is slated to OV at Nebraska in September. Keep an eye on this one.
4. Bryce Benhart (4-Star, OT) [Lakeville, MN] - It's a good season for OTs in Minnesota and Benhart is one of the best out there. Initially thought to be trending Wisconsin's way the train has slowed down and Benhart wants to visit Nebraska before making a decision. The Husker's are in a top group with Wisconsin and Tennessee.
5. Joey Porter Jr. (4-Star, CB) [Wexford, PA] - It may be odd to see the son of NFL great Joey Porter interested in Nebraska, but he is and that has almost everything to do with Porter's connection to Scott Frost. Remember that Frost was coached by current Steelers HC Mike Tomlin for a while in the NFL. Obviously Penn State is the big pull here, along with Pitt, but if Porter wants to go away from home, Nebraska has more than a puncher's chance.
6. Ty Robinson (4-Star, DE) [Gilbert, AZ] - Robinson has been trending Nebraska's way for a while now but has yet to pull the trigger. If Nebraska can get him back to campus in the fall (and they should be able to) that should seal the deal.
7. Tiawan Mullen (3-Star, CB) [Pompano Beach, FL] - Mullen has been predicted to Nebraska via the 247sports crystal ball. Mullen was offered by Frost and company when they were at UCF so the relationship and trust is already there. He already OV'd at Pitt in June but plans on OV-ing to Nebraska for the Akron game. Kansas State and Indiana area also in the mix.
8. Wandale Robinson (4-Star, RB) [Frankfort, KY] - It might seem odd to bring in another RB/WR hybrid, but that's what this offense is built on and Robinson certainly fits the bill. He is slated to visit for the Akron game but is looking at Alabama and Ohio State as well. His recruitment has been a bit difficult to follow but Nebraska could nab him if they wow him on his visit that first weekend.
9. Jamel Starks (3-Star, ATH) [Decatur, GA] - Starks is a lightly recruited athlete from Georgia but has the speed and the versatility to play a lot of positions on either offense or defense. Nebraska will be hosting him for the Akron game supposedly.
10. Marcus Washington (4-Star, WR) [St. Louis, MO] - Nebraska likely has one spot left at WR in this class... they'd like Williams but would take fellow Missouri product Washington as well who has many of the same offers. Washington has visited Ohio State and currently has offers from Georgia, Texas, Missouri and Oregon to sift through as well.
11. Cameron Coleman (4-Star, WR) [St. Louis, MO] - It's a good year in St. Louis for talent yet again (especially at WR) and Coleman could be a take regardless. Nebraska is in his top four currently and the speedster certainly fits the mold for what Frost and Co like to do in their offense.
12. Jalani Williams (4-Star, S) [St. Louis, MO] - It's hard to tell where his recruitment is. He boasts a TON of offers but rarely does interviews. Oklahoma may have a leg up as he has visited there unoffficially but Nebraska is putting it's best foot forward as well. This one will take a while to play out.
13. Marquez Beason (4-Star, ATH) [Duncanville, TX] - The one time Husker commit surprised everyone and picked Illinois as his school about a month ago. He did that because his HS coach was given a job on Lovie Smith's staff. This one is a hunch to me, I have no inside info, but depending on how this season goes for Illinois Smith could be out of a job and that could open things up for Beason who knows about Lincoln and felt comfortable enough to commit here once. Keep an eye on him if Illinois has the season they are expected to have.
14. Enokk Vimahi (4-Star, OT) [Kahuku, HI] - He will be visiting Notre Dame for the first game of the year but seems pretty up for grabs. Benhart is obviously Nebraska's #1 target at tackle but they have done work to stay in it with Enokk as well. If he visits, all bets are off but Notre Dame seems to be the safest bet for the moment.
15. Danielson Ike (4-Star, OT) [Kansas City, MO] - Ike has kept is recruitment fairly close to the vest currently but he did visit Nebraska in June (along with Louisville, Michigan and Alabama) so Nebraska is in it. If the Huskers can secure another visit they would likely take the big Tackle, but again... Benhart is definitely the #1 in the board at the moment.
Let me know if I missed any names that you've been seeing bantered about!
