We are almost 3/4 of the way through the 2018 season and I thought it would be fun to reflect on some of the questionable or debated items from the past off season.
Case Keenum:
I was listening to "Horsin Around" pregrame pod cast and they brought up Case Keenum and their thoughts of him. As they were debating their points of view I was thinking about my thoughts and thought I would share them here. I had cautiously high hopes for Case but early in the year he showed more of the journeyman side then the future franchise QB. One thing he has show consistently is a drive to improve and never give up. Last year if we blew a 10 point lead to KC at home do you think that offense drives down to be in position to have a chance to win? I don't. I believe they fold like a house of cards. Case in not going to be Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning. Case is QB that when everyone else on offense does their job that is really competitive and pushes is team to compete until the clock is at 00:00. I think the signing of Case should be considered a success. I know the 36 million over 2 years is a lot of money, but he is being paid as an average QB. The guys being paid similar average yearly salaries to Case are Cam Newton (20.76 million), Tom, Brady (20.5 million), Ryan Tannehill (19.25 million), Blake Bortles (17.48 million), Andy Dalton (16 million), and Tyrod Taylor (15.25 million). Cam and Brady are outliers in this group, but Case is as good or better then the rest of this group. I believe some (me included) were hoping for more out of Case given what he did in Minnesota last year, but he has lead a team and is helping change the mindset from hoping to win to expecting to win.
Splitting the Oline Coaching duties:
There were some questioning if splitting oline coaching int guard/center and tackles was right. I would say the returns are been reasonably successful, especially as injuries have piled up but the oline play has not fallen off dramatically.
Moving OLBs to DLine room:
I think this has worked ok as well. Cubb has been pretty successful and I think part of this has to do with Ware being there to mentor him. The dline and OLBs are the strength of the defense at this time. Sure could have done worse.
Overall I think this team is showing the spirit of Case and Vance. Both guys seem to be fighters and gritty with a determination to to find a way to win. No matter how the season ends I think the Broncos are on a track that should lead to success going forward. We may look back on the 2018 season as the turning point for the team to be on of the best in the NFL again.
