All I'm saying is, when healthy, are they really that different? Or, having played catcher and not getting as many plate appearances per season, or playing while dinged up? At the same age, Rod Carew had roughly 1000 more ABs, or the equivalent of 2+ seasons.

As for the defensive shifts, yes - they have been more extreme in the last 10 years. So much so, that the league has been worried about its impact on the game, and rule proposals have been discussed.

Injuries are a part of the game, they shouldn't be used as a way to say what if! You think Carew might have ever played through an injury?

IMO they are different, Carew was simply the games best hitter for a decade.

Mauer has not adjusted to the shift, the fact it's happening so much more has nothing to do with it, as I said you couldn't put the shift on with Carew because he could hit the ball to all fields, Mauer simply has chosen not to make an adjustment.
