Agree 100% you can have 6 Stevens out there the other team will score goals. Look at the rangers. Great defense but outside of nash what else? If im sather i move garadi or mcdonugh and get in another o weapon.

Besides a good d man stay at home wont help us on the poweray which is what we need

Considering the suspension of Torres for an obviously clean hit, a team of 6 Scott Stevens on D would be banished from the league after a couple games. It's a girl's league now. Ask Cindy.

2 firsts for 1.... damn... that's hard to pass...

but would we be drafting quality? I believe we can bring in an impact player with the right choice at #9 but by dropping back for two firsts, are we missing out quality players?

like what I'm saying is, would we be getting Impact players or guys filling out the 4th line?

thats a big gamble and its a tough one.

i mean look at it bernier was taken ahead of parise and is a career 3rd liner. parise might go to the hall one day.

just never going to know but i do agree your giving up possible quality for quanity.

everyone taken in the first round should be treated as a player that will be on the 1st or 2nd line. or 1st/2nd d man pairing. otherwise just trade out of the 1st round and get your role players later in the draft

if this was last year. i probably would've took the deal. moved back and drafted suban or that russian goalie. and took the other pic on another player. no goalies worthy of 1st round this year

A Selection of Top Goalies 2013:

TL:DR: Drafting a goalie in the first round is a total crapshoot, and 100% not a quick solution to Marty retiring unless your goal is to have the kid you draft ready to take over in about 6 years.

In fact, the only goalie who made a really quick jump to the #1 starter role was Fleury, who quite frankly seems like a bit of a train wreck at times, and I believe is vastly overrated and only still has an NHL starter job because the he has the two best players in the world playing in front of him.

Lundqvist: 7th
Bobrovsky: Undrafted
Rask: 1st (21st) -- Drafted 2005 (7 Years to become #1 Starter)
Anderson: 3rd
Crawford: 2nd (52nd)
Schneider 1st (26th) -- Drafted 2004 (8 Years to become #1 Starter)
Holtby: 4th
Niemi: Undrafted
Fleury: 1st (1st Overall) -- Drafted 2003 (Definitive Starter in 2nd Seson)
Howard: 2nd (64th Overall)
Price: 1st (5th Overall) -- Drafted 2005 (5 Years to become #1 Starter)
Reimer: 4th
Miller: 5th
Quick: 3rd
Nabokov: 9th

Also, just to add a bit more clarification to my reasoning for not drafting goalies early. It seems to be that goalies just develop at different rates. They're much harder to project. Similar to defensemen. Forwards on the other hand are a bit easier to project, but that's not the most important part.

The reason Goalies are tough is because, IF a goalie doesn't become a top 15 NHL starter, they're a failed draft pick. If you draft Monahan at 9 and he only becomes a 20G 50Pt player he's still a big contributor and has a place in the lineup. Heck even if he only plays on the 3rd line and is a 15G 35Pt guy he can still contribute. If you draft a goalie and he's a career backup it's a total and complete waste of a pick.

i agree goalies are a crap shoot. but you have a better shot at getting someone "good" it looks from that list in rounds 1-3. yeah it wont solve the goalie problem over night but you know what i wouldnt mind having the problem the kings have with bernier and quick 4-5 years down the road.

I'm generally not crazy about taking goalies that high. With the exception of a handful goalies are a dime a dozen. Too many variables to properly judge and burn that high of a pick. That's my personal opinion.

I have no problem with taking some project goalies in the later rounds 3+, but we gave up quite a few picks.

There's also this really great young undrafted goalie playing somewhere in Europe, but I can't remember his name.

If a Goalie is good enough to earn a high ranking I have no problem taking him. What are our other options? Heck a 19 year old just led America to a bronze. He was taken in the second round.

i think the flyers would love to get a d man with their pick. who knows devils could use that as a barging chip with another team that might also be looking at a defenseman. maybe try and make a deal even if just for another 2nd round pick

First time every Lou said that I think.
Typical response is they will take the best player available regardless of position.
