It's retread day for the Red Sox today!!!

The Red Sox have signed right-handers Jose Contreras and Brandon Lyon to minor league deals and assigned each to Triple-A Pawtucket, the team announced (hat tip: [ame=""]Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald[/ame] on Twitter).
Contreras, 41, was released by the Pirates just over 24 hours ago. He's spent time on the bereavement list and dealt with shoulder inflammation recently, but as Tim Dierkes noted yesterday, Contreras has excelled at Triple-A Indianapolis of late. The veteran Cuban has allowed just one earned run with 19 strikeouts against five walks in his past 16 2/3 minor league innings. Contreras is represented by agent Jaime Torres.
Lyon, 33, was released by the Mets 10 days ago. He was terrific in his first 31 1/3 innings for the Mets, posting a 3.16 ERA with 22 strikeouts against 10 walks in that time. However, he yielded eight earned runs over his next three innings of work, including a disastrous six-run meltdown against the Nationals. This will be Lyon's second stint with Boston, as he saved nine games and pitched to a 4.12 ERA in 59 innings with the Sox back in 2003.

Sad news about an insanely underrated player. From Boston.com:
A newspaper in Mississippi is reporting former Red Sox slugger George Scott has passed away at age 69. Scott, known as “Boomer,” was signed by the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1962 and made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 1966. He played eight seasons and part of another for the Red Sox from 1966 to 1971 and again from 1977 to 1979.
Scott was one of the finest defensive first basemen to ever play the game. He was a key part of the “Impossible Dream” Red Sox of 1967 and after his stint with the Brewers was back in Boston for the insanity of 1978. For his career he had a line of .268/.333/.435 with 271 home runs and 1051 RBI. He won eight Gold Gloves.

David Ortiz did not take the word of Boomers death very well at all.

Another fucking Dent? Apparently, there is. And, like father, like son.

First, Bucky Dent tormented the Boston Red Sox. Now his son is doing it, too.

The Class A Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League, a Red Sox affiliate, were two outs away from their first perfect game when Auburn Doubledays shortstop Cody Dent ruined it Wednesday night with a bloop single.

Jamie Callahan had struck out nine in six innings, Mike Adams was perfect in the seventh and eighth, and Taylor Grover came on to try to finish the gem in the ninth against the Washington affiliate.
Spinners first baseman Nathan Minnich made a diving catch for the first out of the ninth, but Lowell's good fortune then ran out.

Dent, whose father hit the key homer over the Green Monster for the New York Yankees against the Red Sox at Fenway Park in the 1978 AL East playoff game, blooped a ball over shortstop to end the bid for perfection.

What is Auburn's parent team?

If it's not an NYC team I might actually have cause to hope this guy turns out better than his father did.

If true, this would be just as funny as it would be sad. It's always funny to hear a funny name, but, then, you have to think about the kid, who has to live with it.

From a tweet from Peter Gammons yesterday-

Red Sox players swear this is true:Alfredo Aceves named his new son Appollo The First Aceves.

To me, this is a "did you know" item, as I had not heard of this. But, it is certanily cool enough to share here I think.

I was on this date back in 1982 that Jim Rice climbs into the Fenway Park stands from the dugout to assist a young boy who had just been hit in the head by a savage line drive foul off the bat of Dave Stapleton. The Red Sox slugger's quick response of picking up the four-year old boy and running through the dugout to a waiting ambulance is credited with possibly saving the child's life.

On a side note, I doubt Drake Britton knows there is a Britton Road
in my native Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

It's the 2nd busiest commercial street, after May Avenue, in the neighborhood I grew up in.

Too bad we didn't win today, but we'll survive.

GO RED SOX!

Dodgers 8, Rays 2, Final!

We gain a game on the stRays, and the chances of
our getting to participate in a Sinstripe-free post-season
also go up!

BEAUTIFUL!

For some reason I was thinking Detroit had beaten the Yankees when I posted the above.
Detroit lost, regrettably, but the chances of a Sinstripe-free postseason are still good.

The part about gaining a game on the stRays was accurate though.

We're off today, starting a 3 game series in Toronto tomorrow.

I'm planning on trying something I saw on the Dodger forum last night. Specifically starting a single thread
for a whole series. Maybe that will get other people posting on the threads I start. That hasn't been happenin as often as I would prefer.
