OK, I can't be the first to ask this but maybe I am (here)...

With Bochy picking reserves, and of course our Silicon Valley friends, which Giants do you guys predict will be Allstars in the upcoming year?

I'll go with Pablo, Posey, Cain, Romo, Vogey and (for the heck of it) Zito

Yeah man! Go for #3 in 2013! New Mayan cycle!

I think it's way too early to know or guess - it's going to depend most importantly on their (early) 2013 performance.

That's the point.

Make a WAY early prediction now so we can all ridicule you later for how horrible your picks were...

Really, Marco? So it will depend on how they are playing the first half of the year? I hadn't thought of that, thanks!

I guess it was reckless of me to start a thread where we all make guesses as to who will have good first halves. My bad.

Oh, and this package arrived for you: :dunce:

:rolleyes2:

I'd be shocked if Panda is a starter in this one, with David Wright being (in theory) the onlky All Star calibre player for the home team. I think the Mets are going to go out of their way to get him voted in.

As for the rest, assuming everyone stays healthy, I say 3-4 guys. Unless you're Joe Torre I don't think too many guys would stack the team with their own players. Most managers will do the right thing and add guys from around the league.

The Giants fans have shown an ability to write computer programs to stack the all-star team with their own guys, therefore, we should have more starters than we deserve.

add to that that our manager gets to decide on the pitchers (for the most part) and any close calls will fall in our favor.

It isnt really a case of "stacking" the team as much as it is a case of our guys having all the tie-breakers.

The manager doesn't have as much leeway as he did a decade or so ago. It's my understanding that the process (since '02 or so) is now :
- fans vote and pick 8 (NL) or 9 (AL) starters
- 16 players are voted in by the pros (players, coaches, managers) - 8 pitchers and 8 position players (one for each position)
- manager then picks 9 (NL) or 8 (AL) players

Note that the "manager's" picks MAY not really be his choice, as it is probable that at least one and maybe 2-3 players are chosen to satisfy the "each team must be represented" rule.

Then the manager picks "replacement" players (although I *think* that All-star participation is now mandatory, unless you fit one of the official exemptions, such as having pitched too recently or being injured - so the manager probably won't have as many choices as in the past: players can't just say "I'm not going").

So the NL manager picks 8 players PLUS any replacements. In the 1990s, the managers picked everybody but the starting players.

So you're counting cards and you're still not going to play All-Star Blackjack???

While the whole post is correct, the bolded is REALLY the part that changes the discussion. I had forgotten about this added twist to the game. It will be interesting to see how the selection process is affected due to this.

OK, I'll play. Although I should start out by offering my selfish opinion that I'd really prefer the players get those 3 days of rest - especially guys in the 'pen, most especially the closer.

I can see Posey making the squad, and might even be the starter. The big rival is still Yadier Molina, due to popularity and where he plays (East of the Rockies). But what with the great "rehab" story, winning NL MVP, and leading his team to a 2nd WS in 3 years, he isn't the "unknown face" he might have been outside of CA until recently.

The only other position player that might squeak in is Panda (and that only if the ballot boxes are stuffed). Nevermind that he (and Melky with Cain) basically won the all-star game LAST year : with Aramis Ramirez and David Wright in the same league, it's going to be an uphill battle.

That leaves pitching. Since 8 of the pitchers are voted in and Bochy probably picking 3-4 pitchers AND replacement pitchers, I would *expect* that Cainer would be selected (based on his history - he could be selected by the players, and I really don't see any pros complaining if Bochy picked him). It would be nice for MadBum to get the honor for the first time, and if he pitches like last year, he'd definitely deserve it. And I have a sweet spot for Vogelsong - his story is a great one, and if he puts up another year like the last two, he might squeak in (picked by Bochy). Romo has had an *amazing* two years, and should be one of the contenders for "closing" or "setup" roles - but as I've already said, for selfish reasons I'd rather that he get 3 days rest. And 3 or 4 Giants pitchers could easily be seen as "favoritism" (even if one or two are excused because of pitching on Sunday previous to the AS game - heck Bochy could pick Romo and then pitch him on Sunday, so he'll get the honor AND the rest).

So : Posey, Panda (if the 'bots are working hard ;) ), Cain, MadBum and maybe Vogelsong or Romo.

I think there's a better chance that it'll be just : Posey, Cain, MadBum
