Andy Dalton....horrid.

Also, take a look at the QB PAA. As I understand it this is a lot like WAR in baseball....this stat says Andy is barely above replacement level.

NFL Total Quarterback Rating - National Football League - ESPN

Bottom line: Andy Dalton is not a very good QB and should be replaced as soon as possible.

Another stat that had a very good premise behind it, but imo they took too far and made way too subjective, or more than should have been.

I'm not a big fan of this stat or QB Rating, but both have their pros and cons.

And no, nobody is comparable to Mark Sanchez.

The most important stats are TDs / compl % / INT

Dalton is in the top 12 in all categories (unfortunately INT's as well). He's 12 in completion percentage (62.3%) the next 3 highest are Brady at 63, Brees at 63 and Ben at 63.3. #7 overall for TD's thrown at 27. Made too many bad decisions and threw too many picks, but overall he's a good quaterback. He's also in his second year. To say he's horrid is just asinine.

Oh yeah, forgot the most important stat. Wins. Back to back playoffs in his second year in a tough divison...but yeah, he's terrible. Fuck Dalton. We should play Gradkowski more often.

Disagree. There are a number of stats you have to look at in concert.

To put completion % into context, ypa is very important. It helps to account for difficulty of throw. If a player is throwing the ball 5 yards down the field every time, of course his completion % is going to be high, but it doesn't mean much. Dalton is 18th in ypa. Sacks is one you have to be careful with as strength of o-line is a major factor, but it is important as well. When you're taking sacks instead of attempting to complete a more difficult throw than you normally would or instead of throwing the ball away, which Dalton does plenty, it also helps your completion %. Dalton has the 3rd most sacks in the league at 46. Quality of receivers and offensive system are also important. He has one of the best systems and a top 3 wideout. # of attempts (15th) is a bit more subjective and not as important, but should be factored as well.

So on and so forth.

Maybe its just me, but it appears that Dalton goes into this "conservative" mode every so often where he'll simply just throw the ball out of bounds on third down every time. A lot of QBs do it, often its not a bad idea, but it seems to me he's an expert at it. you can't move the ball if that's your favorite throw.

probably just me...

but there's no denying his average-ness.
If I were to compare him to someone, I'd say Alex Smith, although Smith is probably a more accomplished game manager, he lacks the "wow" factor, if Dalton was on a "good" team, that team would be looking for its next QB, but fortunately for him, he plays on the Bengals, as long as he can get us to 9-7 or 10-6, no one will care.

Next season's schedule is abysmal though, he needs to improve next year, or its curtains.

So we have an average to slightly above average QB who is not going to cost us a fortune and we keep building a top defense and a solid offense. Dalton is capable of winning, even though he is not the kind of guy that hoists a team on his shoulders and carries them to the SB on his own basically like a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. There have been very good teams with average to slightly above average QB's. However, in order for that to happen we have to build t he rest of the team also. Just means we will have more money to spend on Green and Atkins instead of having to find 100+ million for Dalton.

he's still going to need to improve, if he goes 4-12 next season, he'll be toast, whether we have a hard schedule to blame it on or not.

False. The last average QB to win a Super Bowl was Brad Johnson....a decade ago. It's a different league now. You need an elite QB to win it all.

We do not have an elite QB.

So where on earth do we find this elite QB? He isn't in this draft, and I don't see teams who have elite quarterbacks in a hurry to part with them. Our best shot at this point would seem to be hoping Dalton gets better.

Draft one in the next year or 2.

Doubtful one is available in the upcoming draft, but yes, maybe in a couple of years. Meanwhile, we go as far as Dalton can take us. If the team continues on an upward trend, we'll have to trade up to draft that guy. Interestingly, there are maybe seven elite quarterbacks in the league, and three of them failed to make the playoffs (Eli Manning, Big Ben, Brees). Does this mean only Denver, New England, Green Bay, and Atlanta are the only possible SB winners this year? I even hesitate to put Ryan in the elite category, as he has won as many playoff games as Andy Dalton.

I think there are 10 in the league. Ryan was one of them. Luck was one of them too. Brees gets a pass with all the crap the Saints went thru this season....

RG3 and Wilson are right on the cusp of elite IMO.

I think Dalton has already mazed out with what he can physically do. It's just not enough. He is what he is. I think we should demand better. We obviously deserve better.

The biggest problem the offense has right now is the total disappearance of the running game which was so productive for about six weeks.

The offensive line didn't exactly close the season on a positive stretch, which hurt the run game. Dalton doesn't scare defenses enough to force them out of the box. Hell, if AJ Green wasn't on the team, opposing defenses would put 9 in the box and make Dalton just take a bunch of deep shots.
