Taking a look back I find it bizarre that the first 6 picks in the draft were goaltenders, and wow there really was nothing to choose from.

I'm surprised that based on the rules for who teams could protect that there wouldn't be more talent somewhere along the lines. This list is brutal.

Mike Vernon and Dwayne Roloson are pretty solid keepers. The pool for defensive talent wasn't too bad. Schneider, Kuba and Leschyshyn all had pretty decent careers.

As for the forwards? Heaven help these teams when they got down a goal. Outside of Geoff Sanderson these guys (to quote a fellow poster) couldn't score in a whorehouse with a fist full of fifties.

Yeah, what I wouldn't give to have had Kuba since then. Sanderson was a great grab. And I wonder why Roloson was allowed to go away. Tyler Wright is still with the team and was a great pickup for the organization. Not necessarily for the on-ice product.

Tabaracci and Chabot. Ugh. Only way it woulda been worse if is it was Jim Carey and Red Light Racicot.

I woulda sworn that Tugger came from that draft. He was UFA right after that.

Schneider, Odelien, Sanderson, Tugnutt, Roloson, Dineen and then drafting Knutsen and Klesla... They really should have gotten off to a better start.

Edit: Of course, reading further I see Schneider and Roloson both snubbed them. So that explains some of it.

Buffalo just had no use for him then. At the time he was the clear third string goaltender in Buffalo behind Hasek and Biron and they had Mika Noronen in the minors, who was planned to be their goaltender of the future after Hasek retired (we can see how well that worked out).

Hindsight and all, Roloson may have been worth keeping, but at the time there was definitely no use in using up one of their protections on him.

One thing I did not know:

San Jose traded Jan Caloun, a ninth-round pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, and a conditional pick in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft to Columbus on June 11, 2000, after the Blue Jackets agreed not to select Evgeni Nabokov.

Wonder how that would have turned out for Columbus and Nabby.

I was thinking more why the Jackets let him go after getting him. He should have easily been the best goalie they ever had. But he refused to go to the Jackets apparently, played in the AHL.

Haha, oops.

I can understand a goalie not wanting to play for an expansion team, but he then turned around and signed with the Wild a year later anyhow.

Somewhat unrelated point: I just learned while following Wikipedia links that the 6 finalists for the Wild team name were Minnesota Blue Ox, Minnesota Freeze, Minnesota Northern Lights, Minnesota Voyageurs, Minnesota White Bears and Minnesota Wild.

I've always thought Wild was a pretty suck-tastic name, but holy crap, those other options are awful.

I thought it was setup that Goalies had to go first then D men and then forwards. That way neither team could load up on one position.

As for the draft it was bad for forwards but the steal of that draft was Tyler Wright for the Jackets. Loved him in a Pens uni...

Ehh....sad this is what we come to talking about.....

You know, the Organization should have realized that MacLean was a raving lunatic when he picked Rick Fucking Tabaracci first.

I got to see him a LOT in Washington. He was probably one of the worst goalies I ever saw who got to the NHL. I mean Peter Ing level bad.

you think this draft was bad, look back at Atlanta's the year before, they did awful and they were the only one picking. Conversely, Nashville did pretty well in 1998

the only player i was pissed about losing in all of the expansion drafts was Scotty Walker in 1998.
he was a fearless little ball of energy, and pretty tough to replace.

Nashille's goalie situation was pretty sweet too.
Vokoun, Richter, Dunham. though Richter never signed with them - not sure how that worked.
