Even those who like him would say he was overpaid but he could have been signed for much less several years ago. That has been argument all along. The FO led by McCloughan and Allen screwed that up. Now for $20 million he would have been perfect. How are the Skins doing without him?

If I am not mistaken SM actually wanted to work with Cousins & work out a deal satisfactory to everyone. Allen & Snyder were I believe the ones who got in the way & tried to be clever with their ridiculous multiple tags (& then kick him to the curb after that).

As I have stated before - there should never have been a 2nd tag (or at least one that lasted more than a few weeks). Decide early on that you want the guy & pay him or move him - don't waste a couple of years waffling.

You are mistaken. In the earliest talks when folks were talking about paying $13 - $14 million for Cousin's, SM was quoted as saying he wanted to sign Cousin's but didn't want to break the bank. This was in the very earliest days pre-contract talks. You might remember after one game in which Cousin's had a big game and helped the team win that after the game was over Cousin's ran up to SM and rubbed the top of his head while asking "how do you like me now?" SM stated more than once that he wanted to resign Cousin's but did not want to break the bank or not have money for other players. It was the beginning of the mishandling of Cousin's contract.

That’s how I remember it . The skins weren’t sold on him however
When they gambled and list they should have ponied up

Yep, that was the deal. Cousin's was over paid in the end but that was the mistake of SM and Allen.

Funny thing is the FO then went out and gave Smith a ridiculous extension which wasn't necessary. Stupid is as stupid does.

I know that this is going to come as a surprise to a lot of posters here but Kirk Cousins will play better this season!!

How much? I'm not sure, but one thing is certain...another season like the 2018 campaign and Minnesotan's will be looking to move on from him. The cost be damned!

Totally agree about that second tag. Considering the number of teams that actually wanted him in free agency there was no way that they shouldn't have gotten something in trade for him.

Yes - that sounds about right, but also sounds like SM was at least operating in good faith. I believe that if it were primarily up to SM they would have made a deal or at a minimum let Cousins know earlier in the game that it wasn't going to happen. They could have at least avoided that stupid 2nd tag.

I remember the GB game where Cousins got in SM's face. Afterwards Cousins stated that it was all in fun & no harm was meant (in retrospect & knowing Cousins' demeanor I believe him). I truly believe that if SM was given sufficient power & time he would have resolved this situation much better. Unfortunately it appears he had neither.

I have stated before that SM was certainly not perfect, but at least he operated like a true GM & I believe that this team would be better off if he were still around w/ sufficient power. Letting him go I guess was not that big of a deal, but he should have immediately been replaced by a true GM. I guess that Williams has some of this type of power but apparently not much. I truly hope that Williams has more power over the near future, but I doubt it. This idea of making personnel decisions by committee is stupid. Oh well - can only hope for the best.

BTW - regarding SM. It has now been years since he was let go & apparently due to a drinking problem. Funny how till this day you hear almost no other evidence of this drinking problem. Bruce Allen is a POS.

Well blame it on Allen & ultimately Snyder. SM is no longer part of the mix & wasn't part of the problem during the latter stages of the Cousins debacle. The problem starts at the top.

A side note , i am working at the perry Nuclear plant outside of Cleveland and dorsey and the fan base here in Cleveland give SM a lot of credit for building this team

I believe whoever the Redskins hire or sign is hampered by Dan and his right hand man at the moment. Vinny or Bruce.
