I mean it's just good business sense for those 16 players to not want to participate. This is like if a player is injured right now going into the playoffs and is a pending free agent. Do you push your body right now or do you preserve your own health for the longevity and potential future earnings?

These players sitting out is basically the long game of load management. They don't know the long term effects or severity of this respiratory virus. Given that much of their future earnings are tied to them being able to actually to exert themselves physically to a maximum level, I wouldn't participate. It just isn't practical.
