What's the lowest allowed just curious
In a 16 game season? Who's average is that?
ESPN.com - Page2 - The List: Best NFL defense of all-time
Apparently the 2000 Ravens defense averaged less than 11 points a game, and the only team to do that in 25 years at the time of this article.
1976 Steelers gave up an average of 8.625 points per game over 14 games.
'86 Bears had an 11.6875 average
00 Ravens had 10.3125
Yeah, they called it the Steel Curtain for a reason - and that was back in the day when games were played without rules...Thanks for the post, Three.
I wonder where we rank as a percentage of points allowed. I think each decade has seen an increase in points scored so I wonder how close a 2011 13.4 is to a 70's 8.6...NinerSickness??!!!
Exactly... back then you could maul the offensive players and not get flagged. Either way though, this defense is fun to watch.

If you're wondering where this ranks in 49ers history.
1st--------- 13.4 PPG
2nd-- 1946--13.5 PPG (Inaugural Season) AAFC not NFL
3rd --1984-- 14.2 PPG

I double checked these numbers...
In 2000 (31 teams) the average total points per team was 330.7742 or 20.6734 per game.
In 1976 (28 teams) the average total points per team was 268.1429 or 19.1531 per game. The 1976 Steelers averaged allowing 9.86points per game, not 8.6 as previously stated. (138/14 = 9.86)
In 1986 (28 teams) the average amount of points scored per game was 20.5200 points per game. The 1986 bears allowed 11.6875 points per game.
In 2011 (32 teams) so far the average amount of points scored per game has been 21.9188(8373 points in 382 games). The 2011 49ers have allowed 13.4166 points per game.
The 2000 Ravens have a differential of -10.36 points.
The 1976 Steelers have a differential of -9.296 points.
The 1986 Bears have a differential of -8.83 points.
The 2011 49ers have a differential of -8.57 points.
So for now the 2000 Ravens are the best defense of all time.
No problem MW. That one was easy. The one with the career average QB numbers was a marathon.
I remember when you presented your stats over on the 'other' ~ mind blowing!
Okay, so by my calculations if the average per game were to remain at 21.9188 and we were to allow less than 24 total points over the next four games, then we would have the most prolific defense in history (or something like that) yes?
I posted those QB numbers somewhere here too if you ever want to reference them...
That would be correct. Relative to the average this team would be the best of all time in terms of points allowed. 24 more points in 4 games if the scoring doesn't slow down; but that'd be tough considering the Niners play the Steelers in a couple of weeks.
I saved a bunch of money in my car insurance by switching to geico....
true story.

Even if those teams have a slightly better points per average and are slightly better... to be in the same topic of discussion is a pretty huge feat in itself. The only thing is that all 4 of those teams won the superbowl. All 4 of those defenses were good enough to overcome any offensive shortcomings they might have had. It remains to be seen about this years 49ers.
