So where does Bums start last night rank among some of the other big games by Giants pitchers in the last 5 years (or going back to '87 if you really want to bring in another).

I think there are 4 games to be entered into the discussion...

2010 NLDS Game 1 - Timmeh complete game 2-hitter, 14 K, 0 BB
2012 World Series Game 1 - Zito over Verlander
2014 WC - Bum complete game shutout
2014 World Series Game 5 - Bum complete game 4-hitter, 8 K, 0 BB

I think in fairness you have to add Timmy in Game 5 of the 2010 series. As a standalone game it was only very, very good (8IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 10K I think), but the enormity of the meaning of that game makes his outing spectacular from a historical perspective.

And frankly, because of its importance, that's the one that gets my vote.

God damn, that '10 team was good. (Ace) Timmeh, (Ace) Cain, (near Ace) Durty, (Ace) Bum. No wonder we never faced an elimination game that year.

This year, only 2 Aces even made it to the LCS level. We had 3.5 on one team.

I think I have to put Bums game last night as the early favorite. It was an Ace performance deep in a tied series. Timmeh's could be considered a "nail in the coffin" game, but that series was never really in doubt.

His game against the Braves was a more dominant start and a table-setter. Bums start at Pit was an elimination game. Zitos, while not nearly as dominant as these other games, was a knife to the Tigers' heart.

This is a workable plan. The key is still Peavy and they have to make sure he's pulled when and if it becomes necessary. They can't let a 2 run deficit balloon to 5 runs because they wait a little too long. This all only works if we actually can hit Ventura this time around ...

I am looking at our chances vs Ventura like this:

Game 2, was our first look at KC's "high velocity guys". Since then we have faced Herrera, Davis, Finnegan and Holland multiple times. And with each appearance by these guys we have gotten better and better......I think we are locked in on their velocity.

While getting 5 from Peavey would be HUGE, I don't think it is needed. If we can get 3 or 4, we are in a good position. The only pitchers not available for an inning or two would be Huddy and Bum (but I would not rule out Bum for an out or two). If Peavey goes 3, then turns it over to a specialist for 1 or 2 outs, we can hand the ball to Petit for 2 or 3 innings. If we can score 2 or 3 runs in that time frame, that's game.

I think we really need more than 3 IP from Peavy in game 6. I am suspect of him going through the KC lineup for the 3rd time. He has had enough rest, and he was solid in the NLDS/NLDS (9.2 IP, 2 ER, 1.86 ERA). It would be bad if we used our bully for 6 IP and lost.

I wasn't listing 3 IP as the max or a the reach-hopeful. It was where we would be happy at the min. And of course we don't burn the bully if we are behind and Ventura looks like a boss.

But we do NOT want to see a game 7. Game 7 momentum goes to the HFA and/or the winner of Game 6. They have both of those bases covered.

While not must win, it is kitchen sink.

I don't mind Buck's actual play calls - the action as it happens. Everything else he says goes downhill pretty fast.

That is actually why I don't like Buck, there is no detail to the call. I think its cause Buck does TV all the time and the Giants rotate their 4 from TV to radio, but they describe the plays as they are happening with a bit of detail that really makes a difference to me.

Buck-"Thats into Right center field, caught."

Kuiper-"Swing and a drive to right, Pence moving back, moving back he leaps and makes the catch up against the wall. He tumbles to the ground but he holds on."
