Don't ever play Lady of Spain again
All with the Devils
Congrats Patrik
Congrats Patrik
So this is an interesting question I think. Is Elias a Hall of Famer? Can probably go a few different ways with that one depending on how you choose to weight and adjust certain factors.
My first instinct is that I'd put him in, but I haven't looked at it in any detail.
I always liked him and he is a great player but judging from recent HOF selections he wont get in. Damphousse has very comparable numbers, all higher than Elias but he played more games, and he has not been elected in.
Elias 1187 games played 399 goals 601 assists 1000 points
Damphousse 1378 games 432 goals 773 assists 1205 points
2 championships, franchise leader in most categories. Yeah, I think he makes it in.

I tend to agree. I have a feeling he'll wind up in that category of guys that were great but not HOFers. Guys that you wouldn't think twice about having on your team but can't really put them in the same category as the all time greatest.
I think he's had a fine career, I just think it falls a bit short of Hall of Fame candidacy though. No 100 point seasons or 50 goal seasons (yes, I know much tougher to accomplish these days). comeds nailed it, I would put Damphousse in before Elias and I don't see Vinny making it either.
Fair or not, I don't think that the average fan sees those championships as "his" teams. I think they think of the Devils' wins as being about Brodeur, Niedermayer, Stevens and Lou and they see Elias as a secondary piece.
I hope he makes it but no sure thing.
In his favor compared to the other near misses or possibilities mentioned is this thread is his post season success. Whether the championship teams are seen by fans as his or not he has excellent post season numbers...the anti-Thornton if you will
I wonder if instead of being Patrik Elias from Trebic, Czech Republic if he were Pat Ellis from Kingston, Ontario if it would strengthen his Hall of Fame resume.
