Contractually obligated to. There's no way of knowing what games are going to be junk at the beginning of any given year.

Beginning of the season....

Game 1:

Texans were expected to challenge for a playoff spot. They are. In fact, they are one of the upper echelon AFC teams with more than a few “star” players that will garner national interest (Watson, Watt, etc). The Jets first and foremost are in a large market which will guarantee viewership. They also drafted a rookie QB who was expected to play a lot and they were expected to improve over last season. Was it a gamble? Sure but they still will grab the NY market and scattered people around the country who have moved from the NY area and still follow the Jets. This was a no brainer pick pre-season and, for the most part, the NFL got what they were expecting.

Game 2:

The browns drafted the number one pick overall and he was expected to be playing now. He is. The browns were expected to be better than last year. They are. The Broncos were expected to be better. They paid big money for a free agent QB and were expected to have a solid D. Also, the NFL needed a “late time zone” game. Each week there are less late time zone games than early time zone games so the games to choose from are less. Also, they are looking for games with a “national draw/interest”. Again, I think they were banking on the number 1 pick and browns improving angle. Again, IMO, given what they had to choose from... another good PRE-SEASON choice

thread starter ; I thought that was it; with the revenues down a little, you would think they could change that contractual situation ? thanks

I really doubt their revenues are actually down.

Even their ratings aren't really down all things considered; streaming namely.

The cap will probably go up by a normal amount.

NFL salary cap for 2019 projected at $187M-$191.1M. The salary cap is once again going up. The NFL announced Tuesday that projections for the 2019 salary cap are in the range of $187 million to $191.1 million -- a decent increase over the 2018 cap of $177.2 million per club.

You took a wrong turn, didn't you. WTF does the Salary cap have to do with TV games?

Owners want their piece of the pie. If they aren't, funny things start happening to the cap like it say only going up 1% or something like that.
Fine, but the cap isn't affecting what games are on in each market.
The Networks try to put games on that will bring the most viewers.

Right. The claim was this was hurting revenue I think though in post #5, so the cap is gonna get brought up.

The only network worth watching is NFL Redzone.

I used to hate since I was on the west coast getting the 2-8 Chargers vs the 3-7 Raiders while the 8-2 Patriots were playing the 7-3 Steelers.
