True, But you need to draft guys like you expect them to beat out the current starters. You are not going to hit on all of them, but throwing away picks on guys who have no upside or role in your scheme is not how good teams are built. See NE Pats.

I'd be willing to bet that our hit rate on our picks rounds 4-7 is in the bottom of the league for the last 10-15 years. Look at this list of bums....2005-2013. Pathetic...I can find a handful of real contributors here..and most weren't very good. Alf is probably one of the best out of the bunch...and we didn't resign him :tsk:

Ouch. We absolutely have sucked at these picks. I realize that the hit rate is normally very low, but I bet almost every team has at least one starter taken in these rounds. This begs the question. Is it bad drafting or bad player development? Or both?

Assuming that Cousins is retained via LTD or another FT, I have to have insurance in the event of injury (LTD) or loss in 2018 (FT). With that I mind, I still believe in competition and would throw one of my 4th round picks (probably #112) at Cincinnati for A.J. McCarron. This move immediately upgrades my QB position, as I see McCarron as better than Kirk coming in. (fuck you all...respect my opinion:D). The competition guarantees that Kirk must step up instead of Riddick Boweing ( the boxer) us once he gets that long term deal, gives us plenty of flexibility at the position, and in the event of injury, there is no significant drop off going forward.

If Kirk leaves, then I still make the move with Cincy, and make that pick to a conditional one. Then I'm looking at the second or third round for a QB who is near my starters level or my scouts have told me, can compete for the starting job.

Here's my thinking on drafting a QB in any draft. Again based on competition, you don't draft a QB lower than round 4...PERIOD!! and I'm stretching to include the 4th round.

out of 39 picks in those rounds i have us hitting on about ten

broughton played 5 yrs in the NFL for a 7th rounder that is a hit
gettis og 5 plus years and still playing about what a 5th rounder is career BU
doughty 7 years in the nfl started for us for quite a few games 6th rounder
golston 10 years solid rotational d/lineman 6th rounder
rob jackson 7th rounder played 5 years
niles paul still on the team
AM still in the NFL had a fabulous 3 year run for us round 6
compton , played in the super bowl BU swing tackle still in the NFL
CT 5th round key contributor for us
rambo starter in buffalo round 6 skins fans hated him but fact is for the position he was drafted at he was a solid pick

so how i see it , is if you are hitting on about 25 % of those picks you can realistically only believe that maybe one of those late rounders ever amounts to anything and hence i take fliers on guys

I hope that you are correct about Dak for this year. I know that Prescott was drafted in the 4th rd. What I am stating is that if anyone knew that Prescott would have even a fraction of his current success he would have been drafted much higher (maybe higher than Goff). I am just stating that nobody really thought much of the guy.

This whole process is a crapshoot & save for the can't miss guys like a Luck you can't really project these guys or call them overrated. Too many successful QBs not taken early in the draft & off the radar to put much stock in any of these reports especially since a lot of these so called experts don't know much more than people on these forums.

totally agree!

i dont see late round picks that will often turn in players that we can use . you take fliers on those guys . at this point if you ask me who is the better prospect suds or say chad kelley i would say kelley and hence i would spend a late rounder on him if i didnt have better options

I agree and do not have faith in Sudfeld. I just don't subscribe to the "let's keep drafting QBs every year and hope a few turns into higher picks years later" theory. Green Bay may have been able to afford it as Favre kept them in contention. We aren't in the position of doing that, I want SM to have as many picks as possible.

And while late round picks are obviously long shots as those list shows that applies to quarterbacks as well. And obviously using a list of Vinny drafted players when discussing the current Redskins with SM in charge of the draft is totally off base.
