Dont' shove them down my throat, especially when they're not remotely relevant to the content.

Why are straight characters 'relevant' to the content?

Quit your fecking whining.

Are they good characters? End of story. A gay character or a straight character can both be good characters.

I question that simply because usually when writers do this the gayness becomes the entirety of the character. Meaning that someone is getting a downgrade.

There's lots of examples of that not being true anymore. And c'mon really? Conversations about lube and accessorizing and episodes about picking out pillow shams at Bed, Bath and Beyond? Meh. Judge the character on the merits of the character, simple.

Love interests in comic books (and lots of other media) tend to be two dimensional ways to move the plot along (since the superhero is a badass, what better way to put them in a bind, than to threaten their love interest?

Shitty writing is shitty writing.

I considering changing a character's backstory to suit your own personal political agenda shitty writing.

Why is it that writers PERSONAL AGENDA?

If I write about a senior citizen in a story, and that character has Alzheimers, is that because I have ALZHEIMERS?

FFS. Think about stuff before you type.

What the eff am i talking about though, you like McGyver and the Full House reboot.

You wouldn't know good writing if it shit on your forehead.

Okay that was maybe a bit harsh.

I'm fucking grumpy today. My bullshit meter needs unclogging.

And forever, writers had to write in code about gay characters. Arthur Conan Doyle, and Agatha Christie - both wrote about gay characters, but you had to appropriately be a detective to figure it out because it was verboten to openly write about it.

Now writers can write about it openly.

Oh, the horror.

I just wrote about all the current characters on YJ.

There's only a few options, everyone has been established as being straight in some form.

Static has a female love interest.

Beast Boy had his heart broken by Terra in the Judas Contract and then years later got yelled at by blue beetle for focusing more on trying to win the love of Raven than doing his job as a hero.

If they make Barbara Gordon gay they give a huge slap in the face to a first generation romance between Babs and Dick grayson

Mostly likely it's going to be a move pandering to people and make Impulse and BB gay together. Which is bad writing.

So yeah, they're forcing it.

And again, given it's comics, they change the effing rules ALL THE TIME.

'Oh well, it's a different universe' or other magical hand-waving.

How about you WAIT AND JUDGE THE CHARACTERS ON THEIR OWN MERITS?

Instead of being a whining crybaby before the fact?

How about they create a new character for all this?

Right, and that character would either be good or sucky on its own merits. Not because of the type of character.

Exactly.

But when you force a change to an existing character, you are making it about that and not about the actual character.

If you create a new character out of thin air, it's very different than you deciding that some already well established character should do so. (although gay vs Alzheimers isn't really a clean comparison).

2) I don't claim that they're great shows. Just that they entertain me quite well. I don't pretend that they're cinematic brilliance. Just highly entertaining.

this seems like an over-reaction, at least for now... as of now we have no clue how much they will mention it nor who it will be... It doesn't even have to be a member of young justice...

I have always seen Vixen as a lesbian, despite her and Jon Stewart's relationship... you got to remember more than 1 out of 10 people are LGBT, to think that not ONE superhero can be, is being naïve... The question is whether or not it becomes an active theme...

Backstories are great, and I agree that I don't like much when they are changed, but you also have to allow for some change when most of these origins were created a while ago...

A) i thought the stat was 2% of the population.

2) They said it's an already existing member of Young Justice (hence my breakdown of the team previously)

D) They really don't. They need to create new, cool existing characters if they want to fill the void. Or...do it the right way like Sam Wilson and Captain America.

Also, when you're bragging about it as social media, that you've changed it, that qualifies for "shoving it down my throat."

A) the more letters they add the higher the percentage

2) I don't see where they say it has to be a member, I see character on the show...

D) they(Marvel) turned Nick Fury into a black man, changes like this happen all the time to keep up with society and to make sure they are not discriminating against a potential fan group... Yes, I get I just used Black as an example to prove my point and the black population is larger than the gay population, so what...

-
You have to give these writers some credit, you may see it to be "shoving it down my throat" but people look for characters they identify with... ask any girl who there favorite superhero is, I bet the mass majority will give you a female superhero as their answer... All they are doing is trying to give every MAJOR people a voice... I don't see what is wrong with that, at least theoretically... The problem is that they often go TOO FAR>... lets just hope that is not going to be the case here...

It was inevitable, and logical to have a LGBT character on the show... on all shows.... just hope they don't forget who and what the show is...

Ultimate Marvel is fine. They literally designed an entire subset of comics to mess around with stuff like that.

But if you want more diversity, create cool diverse characters.

Miss Martian is a great example of my point.

They wanted a cool female character on the new Teen Titans reboot in 2006. They made an awesome character. And now she has been used in Young Justice.

I don't disagree, but creating a new character not from comics or source material is not always seen to be a positive, especially if it means cutting a certain popular character...

But again, I think we are making too big of a deal on this without knowing how it will actually be handled... we agreed earlier(in other threads) that writers will always take liabilities on characters... why does this bother you so much??

Let them do what they are going to do and then we will have a debate afterwards in seeing if it actually matters...
