IF they let Kirk leave, or even franchise tag him again, I will take it as a sign that we are basically rebooting the rebuild. The only real outcome that says we are building a team to compete in the next year or two as apposed to 3-5 years from now is to sign Kirk long term and for at least the next three years get out of the constant quest for an elite QB.
The franchise tag says one thing, we intend to find a better QB in the next year or two and we dont expect you to be here in 2018. Because should Cousins play on the tag, and improve even more.... we wont be able to afford him for sure next off season. Or no let me rephrase that, we will be able to afford him, but the cost at that point WILL be through the roof and the team will have zero leverage.
If KC is tagged that would mean SM is not sold on him or KC contracts demands are way too high.
in that case we need to focus hard on everything else because a rookie qb , whomever he is , will take a couple of years to be ready
And there is the rub. If we once again put ourselves in the find a QB mode, by default we wont be concentrating on other parts of the team. Also lets be honest, if we start McCoy or another retread, and the team regresses, does any one doubt that Danny and Bruce will be lobbying for another move to secure an "Elite" QB in the 2018 draft??
that is exactly what will happen and the same fans bitching about KC will obliterate colt mccoy when he screws up

There is no rub. It all depends on what KC demands.
There is a rub. To distill this to its pure essence, we shit the bed with Kirk. We should've signed him long term last season, but basically disrespected him in process of lowballing him with a $16M AAV deal before tagging him. Then, right after tagging him, Houston gives Osweiler an $18M AAV contract. Kirk must've been fuming then. but we had a chance to still sign him but didn't budge from our original $16M AAV deal. Kirk bet on himself and took all the injury risk playing under the tag.
As everyone say this year, he won that bet in spades. So, now we're in a huge bind. We simply can't let Kirk walk. But we also don't want to overspend. However, we don't have a choice. Joel Corry estimated that Kirk could get a $26.5M AAV deal with $90M guaranteed on the open market. Because we need to sign him, we've got to give the Luck deal. It's not ideal, but we simply have got no choice. And whether he's "worth" it is beside the point. When you have to pay market value for something you need, you often have to overpay. And sometimes you have to overpay a whole lot. That's where we stand now. We should come to a deal sooner rather than later since Kirk's price will only go up from now on out.
I agree with you we should of signed him long term last year. So you finally agree with me that KC is going to want MORE than the Luck deal? How much more we don't know but its going to be more. Its funny that everyone is saying we need to sign KC to a long term deal but no one knows what the numbers are yet. He could ask for 100M guaranteed and you still would say we have to do it. I disagree. i want to see the numbers first.
I don't know what he wants. But a Luck deal should placate him before he hits FA. If he does, things will get exponentially worse.
I think the Luck deal will be more than fair for KC. IF he is asking for more than that is just bullshit b/c he hasn't won anything yet. Lets see if SM even offers him the Luck deal.
What you don't seem to get is that if he thinks he can get more on the market, we may not have a choice if he hits FA. Now, there are some stop gaps to that, such as tagging him again. But that would only piss him off more if he thinks, as Joel Corry noted, he can fetch a bigger deal than Luck. The Redskins got really lucky when Carr got injured. He was up for a contract extension and Kirk was looking to that contract as a comp.
There is no rub. It all depends on what KC demands.
I agree this is where KC cant be greedy. Sure he will get more money from a team like the Browns but does he want to go to the Browns. If KC refuses the Luck deal than I call foul. Its more than fair no matter what he can get on the open market. If he wants to be a Redskin and play with Reed, Doctson and Crowder and possibly Garcon he signs that deal.
Kc could also believe that the Redskins would never let him hit FA and will give SM a huge offer. I dont think he wants to play on the tag again. KC has all the leverage in this deal but SM could call his bluff and not give him a crazy deal.
You decided five minutes after the Giants game ended... anything he asks for if it isnt Mexican Illegals type numbers would be too much. Many of you would accept him back on the cheap, but have made it extremely clear that you would rather go into the season with a worse QB and keep chasing elite, rather than give Kirk what you consider an over payment. Hell some of these guys had already made their determination on him two years ago at this point.
Ideally, I agree that he shouldn't ask for more than Luck. Realistically, if he does, I'm not sure what choice we'll have. A tag may be the only solution but that's flawed for a number of reasons.
