It is a shame that they hired Barry over Wade. Was that all on Jay or did SM weigh in on this?

Yep, not like he is going to say we have lost confidence in Joe and will be replacing him at the end of the year.

yeah, what can he really say ...

"we dont trust the dude ... we sent him on a dounut run while we implemented the defensive gameplan this week."

OK, Good thing I wasn't drinking or eating anything when I read that "sent him on a donut run" line. My computer might be all fucked up. As it is, I had clean spittle off of it.

I'd appreciate a warning next time, Krush...................thanks.

Now to your question.

A day after Scotty Mac was hired as Redskins GM. Jon Gruden was interviewing Wade Phillips according to this Mike Jones article. Redskins interview Wade Phillips for vacant defensive coordinator position Apparently Phillips was interviewed on a Thursday and Gruden had interviewed Barry and Raheem Morris earlier that week on Tuesday. AJ Smith, who Phillips had worked with in Dago, was still in the Redskin mix at the time and he was lobbying for Phillips. While Bruce Allen supposedly thought highly of both Barry and Morris.

As far as resumes went at the time..........................

Wade Phillips - in his 33 years as a Def Co or HC. He had 16 defenses that finished in the top 10 far as rankings including 7 of his past 8 seasons coaching - Sounds like Phillips was clearly in his defensive guru groove eh.

Joe Barry - had Def Co experience under his belt as he was Def Co of the Detroit Lions in 2007 and 20008. Now if that made you go "Hmmm." for some reason like it made me do. This might be the reason why. The 2008 Detroit Lions are the same Detroit Lions that was/still is the only team in NFL history to finish a season defeated. Or you could say winless. Or you could just 0-16.

Now I dunno how much if any weighing in Scotty Mac did on this particular hire after only being there a day. I gotta imagine at the very least, his opinion was heard on the subject. Maybe he declined to give one or maybe due to past working relationships, Allen and Gruden or either one on their own decided to go with Barry.

Regardless how it went down. It looks like the Washington Redskins and their fans ended up on the wrong end of the, "Me fuck you long time." stick once again.

I was on the Wade Phillips bandwagon if I didn't start it. He is the Norv Turner of D coordinators. Lousy head coach but very good D coordinator.

There is a reason we may not have considered for not taking Phillips. We have a young, first time head coach, so did they want him looking over his shoulder?

Good point and even if it was Jay himself who nixed hiring Philips. I can't blame him for that either.

Actually, wasn't there some question about his age and if he could still put in the hours? Didn't I hear something about Wade falling asleep during one of the interviews?

Thanks for the info. When SM was hired I thought he was given full control of the team. So wouldn't he have the final say on the d-coordinator? I thought AJ Smith was let go after they hired SM. Regardless this is why head coaches should not hire the coordinators. Gruden put himself first instead of the team and it cost us dearly. Plus Synder is us ally a Name guy so I cant understand how he signed off on Barry over Wade.

If I've written this once I done so 10,000 times, J. Gruden is being given every opportunity to win or lose on his own terms. If that means getting the staff that he wants, certain types of players in FA and the draft that he and his staff wants, SM appears to be amenable to all of that. I'm sure that SM has a lot of input, but if we're honest, SM really doesn't have to deal with judgements based on what happens on the field. His job is to bring in talent that best fits the philosophy of the HC and his staff. I think that it's important for us to remember this and what SM has publicly stated to be his philosophical stance in building this team going forward, when we begin to judge his draft picks and FA signings. There are differences in the two.
