Remember when philly had Haladay, Lee, and Hamels and didn't even get past the NLDS? You need a solid rotation in the playoffs, but I'd argue a shut down pen is more important.

Need solid 1-2 to get you to 7-8 innings low runs, 3-4 get you to 5 or 6 innings 3 runs or so and let the solid pen get you to set up and close. Seems to be the formula that the Royals had. Mets lost with three TORPs.

You make a good point but I believe Feliz would always be a reliever.
He might, but the thing is we never got a chance to see how he would have fared as a starter after going through a season in the minors trying to develop his secondary stuff. As it was he did very well as a starter until he got hurt that one year when he was in the rotation here.

The shuffling back and forth could very well have contributed to his injury. I know we have had pitchers in the organization who have felt that shuffling back and forth was not good for their arms.

I wonder how a combo #3 in the playoffs would work if Lewis was not back. Like Perez/Griffin. Just get about 3-4 good innings out of them before they blow up. They could let it rip that way and not have to pace themselves. May sound crazy but I have seen it work multiple times where all relievers pitch a game.

Perez minus a couple starts has consistently pitched well through 6 innings, he has a bad inning, but then usually rights the ship again and we're able to get a couple more out of him

Griffin is the one that just seems unable to pitch at least 6 innings right now

So I wouldn't put them in the same boat

We have been really bad at developing top of the rotation type pitchers over the past few years. I believe one of the problems we had was when we thought we had to take really good starters from the minors and use them in the pen instead of going out and getting bullpen pieces in the offseason. When Feliz and Holland came up they were really bad at doing that. I would have loved to have seen what Feliz could have been had they let him stay at AAA all year the year he came up. I would have liked to have seen him stay in AAA all year working on his secondary pitches. Hopefully those days are over.

They draft so many pitchers and can't develop them properly most of the time it seems.

As I pointed out earlier, its not like we trade guys away and then they develop into TORPs elsewhere though, we just never even have our hands on one to begin with, just lots of 3-4-5 types here and traded elsewhere

That seems to a drafting & recognition problem from the get go

I wish we could steal Oakland or the Dodgers pitching scouts.

Jim Bowden rated JD & Co 2nd behind the Cubs Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer on "grading the GMs at the deadline." NOTE: He had the Astro's Jeff Ludhow at 17.

2. Texas Rangers

GM: Jon Daniels

Grade: A+

Analysis: The Rangers were targeting starting pitching at the deadline, but when the potential cost in prospects became prohibitive, they changed their plan on the fly and focused on offense and bullpen help. They benefited fromJonathan Lucroy exercising his no-trade clause to prevent a trade with the Indians, jumping in and trading two top prospects to the Brewers for him in the final hours. Lucroy's game-calling and above-average framing should help the entire staff, beyond his All-Star offensive contributions. The Rangers did well in getting Jeremy Jeffress in the same transaction; he'll give them another option at closer. Acquiring Carlos Beltran was important because not only does he replace the injured Prince Fielder at DH, but his track record of postseason success with both Houston and St. Louis could be a factor come playoff time. The best part of the Rangers' trades? They didn't give up any of their top young players, such as Nomar Mazara, Jurickson Profar and Joey Gallo.

I'm quoting Don's blurb here as a means to help me make the point that I think we should stop giving Nightcrawler shit for mentioning what the Astros do on a given day. It's clear that most of us are at least astutely aware of the rivalry between the clubs, regardless of how much prominence is assigned to it. A lot of us have referenced it. Yeah, we're all capable of looking up the score ourselves. About 90% of the information presented here is stuff we can all look up ourselves.

I post whatever the F I want to here and if someone doesn't like it they don't have to read it, just ignore it. That said I'm not sure its the updates that bother some folks, but the incessant worry he has about the Astros or whatever division rival concerns him that day. Dude has posted here for a long time and pretty sure he came over w most of us from Disney. I know how he posts and have just learned to accept it as his nature. He adds value to the board at times and certainly makes it more interesting (gives me a good chuckle at times at his worrisome ass) but some here just like to have crap to bitch about, like me. Some need to lighten up as well, yeah I try at times.

"Guess what? I did get traded to a winner."

Pretty clever response eh? ha ha ha

Seems like a pretty level-headed kind of guy, and I bet we'll be thrilled with him over the long haul.

Thanks buddy for the post. Enjoyed the read and like Lucroy even more now.

You're welcome......Gave me a hint to why he is considered such a good catcher at calling the game too.

Just read it out on ESPN. I knew the entire deal was nixed because he was not going to be their catcher next year.
