I would give him the money. First two years guaranteed on a six year, 132 million dollar deal without a signing bonus.

Yeah Cousin's agent is not out of line. They are asking for the 2 years at the proposed tag for 2 combined years. 5 years @$110 million, $44 million guaranteed. They have basically told him they will tag him again if he doesn't sign this year. At the end of year three it will seem like a bargain. Insert an out at two or three years.

Yeah I agree with you guys, I'd go ahead and sign him. Sure it's a risk, he's hardly a proven commodity. But going back into the draft is a really crazy idea, we've been trying to draft a QB for 25 years. How many QBs have the Browns drafted in the same amount of time?

So Kirk is basically asking to be guaranteed what he would get over the next two seasons if we end up needing to Franchise tag him again next year. Solid deal, I think we should get it done.

I agree the deal is fair. If KC has a huge season this year he will have SM over a barrel. I am assuming there is a out clause in year 3.

Reports are that Cousin's agent is asking for the amount of the tag for the next two years which is approx. $19 million and $25 million. Apparently the Redskins want something a little less than a $22 million dollar average.

In theory if Cousins has a good year this coming year and they haven't agreed to contract the tag is $25 million then multiply times the number of years they want to sign him for. Since none of us are privy to the contract talks this is all rumor and conjecture.

Once you start tagging a QB, what he is asking for is pretty standard.

The argument is and will continue to be, "do we pay Kirk Cousins for his potential rather than risk losing him"? I say no, pay him under the tag this year and see how things play out. Tag him again next year if you like what you see and try working out a long term deal next off season. If Kick digresses this coming year with the weapons in place and an improving offensive line, McCoy should be in line to start and continue grooming Sudfield or another young draft pick or younger veteran looking to start who is on another teams bench.

I would wait...LY was good, not great... LY all 9 wins were against non-playoff teams...not saying it was all on Kirk, but the 3 games vs playoff caliber teams...WAS got smoked in all 3 I think.

This yr...WAS faces a lot more playoff caliber teams out of DIV...let's see what he does.

I agree with Skinz2Winz. When KC played well, he played against weaker teams with DeSean Jackson back plus he did not do great in the playoffs or against better competition. His passes were mostly dump down to Crowder, or Reed, etc. His accuracy was not very good to the deep outside or longer across the middle. I have read that they (the coaching staff and KC) are working on this and hoping he grows to be a better QB this year with these routes.

I wonder with all of our passing weapons, can another QB come in a replicate his numbers in this offense without being a top flight QB. The top QBs can pretty much carry their teams without as much help around them. I don't see KC being able to do this right now, maybe down the line.

From that perspective, I would only let him have a 1 year franchise contract for now and see if he grows to a top 8 QB.

So you are thinking his passing weapons led him to almost every single season passing record for the Redskins because he was dumping the ball off?

There are valid points but often when the Redskins had bad games against playoff teams it seems Cousins was at fault. Kind of like the NE game when there was something like 10 or more dropped passes.

All that being said he is far from proved but I don't see where it hurts to guarantee him for two years with another 3 or 4 year option .... or we could start all over again since we have had so many good QBs. :noidea:

Of course you can tag him again next year at $25 million and then if it works two years in a row they can pay him the average of top salaries at that point which might then be $28 or $30 million a year.

Remember those ARM loans years ago. Sir you can buy this house for $500 a month and in two years we will make a slight readjustment. Oops, it went up more than we thought. Your new monthly mortgage payment is $1,200 a month. :pound:

Need to Know: Do the Redskins need to lock up Cousins before Luck signs?

Interesting article. What if KC has a better year than Luck?

I'll chalk it up pretty much to the same reasons stated in the article. As well as Luck learning a new offensive system this year. That's not the proper baseline to judge Cuz by this year though. The next step Cuz has to take this year is defeating teams with a winning record that have legitimate postseason aspirations.

If he's unable to accomplish that at some point this season. Paying him the jack he and his agent are looking for would be premature at the least.

So Im curious... why is it when we win games, it was because the team came together. But losses against "GOOD" teams just shows Cousins really isnt worth it??

Fine, cut off negotiations. Make him play under the tag. And when he has an equal season to last year, TAG him again. Then when he has another equal year, and the tag cost $31 million and we have totally pissed away any good will we might have had with Cousins... fuck it, tag him again. Lets not sign him long term until he is over 30 and the tag is up to $45 million. great plan.

Or there is plan B..... we can always trade away 3-4 first round picks for the next great QB. Beause that worked soooo well for us last time.

I can see both sides. Of the argument but I lean toward signing him. Long term. With an out clauses

NO no no, breaking most of the team single season records doesnt mean he has earned it. Until he can carry the team with nothing more than a LT, and a center with a 33rd ranked defense, he doesnt deserve more than $5.30 a year guaranteed. Fuck we shouldnt have tagged him this year as we could have let him walk and started Colt McCoy after all. :thumb:
