That depends on what the "guarantees" are in those years. But I get your point: this is a lot of money for the next three years. But we're paying him for his prime, i.e., before he turns 32. And that's where the cap friendly portion of the deal comes in.

My point is that his contract is not back loaded at all. Or am I missing something.

No, it's not. In that sense, it's not cap friendly. But if the guarantees are frontloaded, that will cut down on the unamortized signing bonus pro-rates. That's key. And the term "guaranteed" money is, at times, laughable. That often includes first year salary, which, barring something like death or grievous injury, will be otherwise guaranteed for vets if they're on the open day roster.

So you can cut him after year 3 with no dead cap space?

No. There will certainly be some dead cap if we get rid of him after the third year. But, based on how much in terms of guaranteed cash he's getting in those three years, the signing bonus appears (and that's just my best guess) relatively low. Because that's what creates dead cap, I'm hoping that there won't be too much of that after year three.

I will wait until they actually release the real details of the contract to give my true opinion.

My knee jerk reaction is we overpaid substantially considering Carolina flat quit on him and JAX also said they would not be able to match the numbers he was looking for before he arrived at Redskins Park.

I do not believe Daniel Snyder had his fingers in this at all and to believe he did is somewhat naive. There is no way SM would be here if DS was meddling.

The Skins line of thinking could be he was at the top of the game last season and fits our scheme very well. They see him as elite and you have to have some elite players to win.

The Saints jumped in late with a good offer. Maybe that is why the price went up to 50M guaranteed.

Signing bonus would be paid for at the beginning of the contract. That could be in the form of a 30 mil signing bonus and a 7 mil salary over the first three years. There is no telling until the details are released.

3/10/2015: Signed a five-year, $70 million contract. The deal contains $39 million guaranteed, SO this deal is the same as Revis's

The term "guaranteed" used to mean "signing bonus" that was paid out at signing. Now, it means that and a whole lot of other things such as roster bonuses that really aren't guarantees at all. Just depends who's throwing around the term. And, as I noted previously, "guaranteeing" a first year salary is a joke. Any vet who makes the opening day roster has his salary guaranteed at that point in the season.

I get that but I was pointing out to you we can't know anything about the signing bonus and thus the cap ramifications until the details are released.
