Heads...we sign him long term for what may look like overpaying today but if he succeeds it will be underpaying. We look brilliant.

Tails...we sign him long term for what is overpaying him today and he busts. We look like idiots.

Then here is a whole other coin...we will call it coin 2

Heads...we tag him and he proves he is the freakin man and it costs us another 2-4 mil per season for him...we look like idiots.

Tails...we tag him and he fails or has an OK season...we look semi smart.

I dont think we look that dumb in either tag situation. We arent going to the SB this year. Im ok with spending that money to get another 16 game look at him. And if he earns himself even more money in that stretch than awesome cuz then we'd have a great QB who probably just led us to the playoffs again.

What does this mean, though? Failure is possible. Its naive to discuss his contract while assuming he can't fail. (I may be misunderstanding you, here).

SO out of curiosity, how does this play out should Kirk play under the tag and actually do better??
The Skins should give him a long term deal if he performs well.

Ok I'm gonna assume this is because you don't want to deal with that possibility...?

there isnt anything to deal with ebb . if the skins or i felt he was going to fail then you would simply let him walk .

i dont believe he is going to fail and its a point not worth discussing . if he fails we are out 19.9 mil for a year and we will need a qb in 17

that is where we stand you want to be half empty glass be it i am half full and being negative doesnt make anyone smarter

Any player has the ability to fail.

But if you are doing a deal, and you are trying to lowball the deal based on the what if he fails factor... you are already screwed.

Right now we are set to pay him $20 million for a single year. Its jusst not logical to risk having to pay him $25 million for a single year next year when we could spread that same $25 million total over two years since we wouldnt even be considering signing him at all if the thought was he has a bigger chance of failure than success.

Agree - why would a Redskins fan view it any other way. Go check out the comments on the related article on ESPN (that place has not gotten any smarter by requiring Facebook accounts). Several so called Redskins fans are ripping Cousins non-stop & almost hoping for him to fail. WTF? Like Skinsdad alluded to - if Cousins fails so be it - they go find another QB next offseason. No need to keep beating that dead horse.

It doesn't matter what you think. The possibility is always there. I'm not being glass half empty I'm literally just starting a fact. It's not about being negative it's about being honest with reality.

The question isn't whether he might fail. That's obviously a possibility. The issue is how likely of a possibility that is. Right now, it's a good bet that he won't fail (compare this to playing average or some other comparable level of play) and, for that reason, it's also a wise choice to land him to a deal which will keep him here for the next few years.

I have no idea what the chances he fails are although clearly I think those chances are higher than most here. But it also depends what "fail" is. We aren't all willing to accept the same thing at the qb position.

It's obvious that Scot has a different view on Kirk's prospects of failing, and we all can agree that we should defer to his judgment on that issue, at least for now. And if you're not willing to accept that for Cuz, what's your alternative? The team basically has no leverage and there are downsides to every option they have. But one thing is clear: we don't have a Plan B and Kirk has shown a lot of promise. Given all this, we're forced to paying the guy a lot of money. Whether it's going to be just for this year or for the next few years will be issue coming up in the next few weeks.

No that's not obvious at all. Scott may well have the same view as me for all we know.

Scot has a plan B, he stated that he has no choice but to always have a plan B. It's the 'sum of the parts' in so far as he's concerned.

I'll bet the farm that he doesn't (on the issue of his projected talent).

What do you base that on? You said it's "obvious" he has a different view. I'd love to see what lead you to believe it's "obvious" he has a different view.

For starters, how about the fact that he franchised Kirk? I'll be the first to admit that, if Kirk reaches a long-term deal, he'll be paid more than he's worth. But going off what I've read of what your assessment of Kirk is, I'd venture a guess that most football people would hold Kirk in higher regard than you.
