The Browns, Texans, Chiefs and Rams all could afford to pay him $20 million annually. And you have to realize, on a long term deal his cap hit over the next two seasons likely WONT be $20 million. If we trans tag him, there are teams who could write him a deal we might not want to match and still not go crazy. I agree, if we give him the non exclusive tag, a team MIGHT not want to part with two first round picks.

But the two firsts is just a starting point. Teams HAVE gotten franchise players for less. Say Manning does retire, would every one be drooling over the 31st pick and an undetermined first rounder next year also realizing we would basically be using one of those picks on a rookie QB??

Good pts, but again I just get the feeling that this is just a high stakes game of chicken. Given your concerns it is likely that they will Exclusive franchise tag Cousins while they work out a deal.

The Browns are drafting a QB at #2. The Chiefs have Smith. Im not sure the Texans and Rams have the cap room to make a move for KC. Even if they do they will not offer KC the money he wants. The SKins can match what they offer. So there is no risk.

The Rams have $58 million in cap space, and the Texans $32. And the Browns could sign him and use that #2 pick on one of the premier pas rushers in this draft rather than going into another three year rebuild under a rookie QB.

thanks for the numbers I didn't know that. but my point is the skins can match any offer in FA and keep KC. That number in FA would be far less than what KC is asking for right now.

Actually Country is right. First refusal means we can match exactly the contract he is offered by another team. BUt if we choose not to match we get nothing in return. We also lose the right to use the transition tag until his contract expires. And as we had the ability to retain him via the transition tag, and chose not to, we also would not qualify for a comp pick in 2017 based on him going to a new team.

Yes & no. He was referring to the Non-Exclusive Franchise tag - not the Transition tag. That tag results in picks in return if he signs elsewhere but is more expensive. The Transition tag results in no picks in return but is cheaper. See the link I sent for details.

the bottom line here is that we cant not lose KC if we put the transition tag on him. the price will be far less in FA then what KC is asking right now. Of course SM is going to match the offer. He just wants to get a lower price.

you can lose him with the transition tag if another team offers something the Redskins don't wanna match and get nothing for him

True but I see no way that it gets to this pt. At worst - the FO basically admits that they played poker and lost & pay the $20 M. Again - my guess is that they will somehow transfer whatever they give him into a long term extension sometime in the offseason. They are simply playing poker rt now & using the media to further their agenda.
This.

We are now in the middle of the dance. Pretty soon, numbers will slip out what has been offered and what is expected. That's when they are real close.....or really far away. No way the redskins trade KC. worst case they tag him and pay him $20m next year.

the skins are going to match any offer. SM just wants a better price for KC. KC is asking for too much right now. No way he sees that money in FA.

I think KC wants 20mil per season annually for the first 3 years. No way he gets that in FA. The price would be far cheaper. That is why the transition tag will work. Why franchise tag him when you can match a long term deal in FA that can spread the money out of multiple years?

Parton the duplicate post if someone said this before (I got lazy and didn't read everyones post)

1) Of course there is a chance we trade KC .000001% but it is a chance
2) Yes we would love to trade RG3 for anything at this point but I see RG3 denying any trade we accept because he doesn't want to see the Redskins happy
3) My prediction is we cut RG3 and we franchise tag Cousins.
4) Hope we do trade RG3 for anything and always wanted to franchise tag KC so he has to prove last year wasn't a fluke. I don't see him as top QB in this league worthy of franchise money. He won against horrible teams and never showed me that he could make big time throws just throws 10yds or less.
5) I cant wait till draft day.

I just heard rumors from websites. Nothing is in stone. IMO KC wants SM to overpay with a long term deal or franchise tag. SM wins by putting the transition tag on KC. Then KC will get real maket value.

There is no way to guarantee that. As I said there are teams in need of a QB who COULD afford to pay his asking price and not break a sweat. We either have to Non Exclusive rights tag him, sign him long term, or i honestly think we lose him.

I doubt that. What KC wants is long term security and a fair contract. My guess is they are using Andy dalton's deal as marker, with cap increases for adjustments. His best chance of long term success is right here. He is in an offense suited to him. He has a coaching staff that believes in him, and a fan base that mostly adores him. I bet that the sticking point isn't even money, but the deal length and the guaranteed portion.

Cmon Shark why would the Rams or Texans pay Romo or Rodgers money for a guy who hasn't won a playoff game yet? Even if someone did offer a crazy deal we would have to suck it up and match it. Very doubtful.

jy KC probably turned down a Dalton or Tannehill like deal b/c he thinks he has SM over a barrel. KC wants to force the franchise tag so he gets 20m up front. Sm should call his bluff and put the transition tag on him.
